Poorly Manco Dingo Kart

Right, here is my manco dingo kart (i think)

Bought as a non runner with the thoughs of it needing a new sprocket and a general clean up and TLC.

Closer inspection shows that the main chain shaft has has a chunk taken out of it where the sprocket used to go.

I'm all pretty new to this and not having the original sprocket to see what worked where doesn't particularly help. Threads are good (poor picture)

The engine is a Kohler Command 11 Pro Series (and I do have the pull cord mechanism, the cord broke so was repairing that)

Frame is fairly straight and ok, needs few bars welding back where they have split away and maybe a lick of paint over few parts

Its only a mess around for the field.

Any thoughts on what could be done? or where to get parts. I see theres a gokartsupply website but they only ship to the US :-(

Also was trying to get the shaft to come right out so I could have a proper look at it but the pulley on the other side will not budge.

Your "chunk" missing is actually meant to be like that. It's called a keyway, the sprocket will have one exactly the same into it and a piece of metal called a key or keysteel will go in the slot and hold the two in alignment, a nut or something would presumably hold the sprocket onto the shaft.

It from the edge of the shaft, about 10mm in, the left part of the keyway (if looking at the pciture) is smooth like the sprocket key has sheared off the edge of the keyway. I would expect the sprocket to sit in relitevly tight to the inner bearing in order to sit inline with the rear one.

OH, yea I think I see what your talking about. Yea Ive got no clue how to fix that. If you have a lathe you could weld onto it and then machine it back to how it should be maybe?

Yep. The only way to repair that as far as i am concerned would be weld it then smooth it out. You could even try jb weld, seen that stuff do some amazing things......

But best bet would be a new axle. You can find them for $25-$35 new, not that bad.

Unless I'm wrong, I think we might be looking at the jackshaft.

There's two ideas. Unfortunately, there's not many other options.

Another option is to put a spacer over the damaged section &, using a longer key, then put your sprocket back on. This option would include having to move your axle sprocket to suit.

Can you rethread it just a tab smaller on the jack shaft end? Or is there more missing than it looks?

I would just get another piece of axle to replace the one that is sheared. It only looks to be about 12" long or so.

was thinking along the lines of fabroman and making up a 'collar' to between the inner bearing and the sprocket which would then hopfully grip on the outer good part of the shaft. but then to get the rear sprocket inline it would have to be moved out towards the wheel.

Am I right in saying that the rear sprocket should be able to move across a few mm? only had a 2 minute look last night.

Hmm, maybe not. How is the mounting plate connected to the axle? If it slides, you shouldn't have a problem... except for that bracket on the frame; it might create a clearance issue
