i was wondering how fast my go cart would go if i put my 440 engine on my cart. i know im gonna have to reinforce my axle because of the torque involved, but what else would i have to do to it. email me at alopehunter15@yahoo.com and tell me what you think. thanks

Hi, cartboy15!
You just happen to be pursuing the same objective a friend of mine is.... He has one of those fairly-large roll-cage gokarts that was originally powered by a 150cc engine and did about 35mph tops. A "mechanic" friend of his worked on it and neglected to refill it with oil. Now it burns equal ammounts of oil and gas. So he bought (for $50!!!) a running Polaris 440 and the secondary clutch/chain case. IF the specs are to be believed, that motor puts out 70hp. Seems a bit of that ol' 70's wishful thinking, but even going off of the numbers that my engine posted (a single carb 290cc- 24hp) a dual carb 440 should easily hit between 40-50hp. So for your top speed, think about it: You've got a kart which weighs 400lbs max with the motor on it, and you're carrying the same hp as a stock VW bug. It wouldn't surprise me if you hit 75mph with it, properly geared. There are some youtube vids that pop up if you search "gokarts snowmobile"... I've been studying them closely to see how they did it. Good luck on your project. When we finally attack my friends Evil Project, I'll post it in here.

instead of emailing you it would be better to just read the post on here and make your comments you have that way every body could gain from what you are doing to your kart.
