So I was given this go kart and I have no previous experience with go karts
The model is “drift II flamin’”
The previous owner said it needed a clutch however after looking at other pictures of an engine which seems to be the same, it appears to be missing the what I can only guess to be a transmission housing, however I could be completely wrong.

When ran the wheels start spinning up instantly.

Many thanks for any ideas or advice as to what my issue could be

Test while up on jack stands...

First thing typically turn down the idle on the carb... A black plastic screw with a star (Philips) drive to it.
Then check the throttle linkage/cable/pedal ect... Many including myself have had a runaway motor due to a slightly pulled throttle.. Causing to runaway when just started....

Your wheels shouldn't spin without the throttle/gas pedal engaged. Could be stuck throttle or like the PO said, bad clutch. What you have is a Centrifugal Clutch, likely 3/4". Economy ones on ebay are less than $20.

Thanks very much for your reply I shall check tonight!
So is there nothing visibly missing? there is 4 bolt holes behind the clutch (you can see 3 in the first 2 pictures) with nothing in them.

No... I was poking fun at terminology....

That is the clutch driver... It engages with the pto shaft to drive the shoes around. It also serves as the shaft for the bell to ride on(which has a bushing). Sometimes the clutch backing plate has notches(indents or teeth) to engage with those notches on the driver, for more positive engagement.

If it were me I'd skip the clutch and go for a torque converter. Better low end torque and will last longer by a long shot

Those 4 holes are for mounting a torque converter backplate. No worries about it!
