Tubing is stronger than channel, So your off to a good start there. Any decent size tubing will work, but it really depends on what size person is goona be riding it and how big of strain you will be putting on the frame via the engine. Large engine plus fluffy fella means thicker tubing required. When i build something i ALWAYS use rigid pipe made for electrical use in 1" size or MAYBE 3/4"..nothing smaller. but i am a fluffy fella so that being said i need to be well assured my fat butt won't go flying across the field when a weld breaks or I bend a tire spindle cause the frame broke! Fluffy and flying don't end well on most case's.
Learn some good welding skill's, cut the pipe's so that they give plenty of area to weld to, and last make as many good angle's as possible to strengthen the frame...remember, tri's are your friend here! They will allow you to brace and make a strong frame without adding ton's of un needed weight due to over bracing.
