Hey guys! A friend of mine just showed this to me, asking me to help dissuade him from installing it into his own shop.

Once I realized the potential, I immediately stole his idea and told him to go spend his money!

So what do you guys think? What do you do for a sound system?

I have a pair of 15" Samsons and a BFM Tuba 30 (home built) driven with a pair of 500w Crown amps in my garage. The neighbors love me.

One sweet garage mod I can't recommend enough is to get a 48" LED shop light and mount a little bit over halfway up your garage door. Put a J box on the wall next to the door and buy a curly cord to wire it with. It eliminates the big dark spot when the garage door is open, and is in the perfect spot to illuminate the engine bay of a car with the door closed.

I also have 120 amps worth of 240v power run out there. 40a for the compressor, and a 30a and a 50a for welders and other big tools.

BRILLIANT! I've got one hanging from the ceiling right now in that position, that gets blocked while the door is up. Since it's a west-facing door in PHX, I don't want windows for sure.

My big concern would be the traveling cable giving power. Have you had any issues with it breaking from all the flex? Or do you not raise that door so much?

I could definitely see adding a detector switch to such a light as well, so it only comes on while the door is up. Something with a weight that rotates, so your not blinded by it being below eye level. I have something similar with my SmartThings garage door controller.

I just had a flash of insight while looking at my door, scheming my light. I think I'll use something like this for the traveling cable, minus the auto-lock feature.



I'm thinking attach it to the wall next to the door, at the top. And then connect the cable to the top of the door, and let the door pull the cable out as it opens.

This is how mine are set up. No issues at all. Both doors are done this way. One gets used multiple times daily, the other a few times a week. No problems with either. Coiled cord is available online. That one is 16/3 SJOW. I recently retro'd the fluorescent fixture with direct wire TLED bulbs.

Speaking of light, here's another one I use daily...

Stick one of these into your overhead outlet next to the garage door opener, it throws just enough light you don't bang your shins or knock things over.

What, you don't have a courtesy light on the auto door opener?

Currently, my garage sounds are either supplied by power tools or a set of computer speakers & an MP3 player; sounds ok, just not enough...

I worked at a workshop some years ago where someone had mounted a car head unit & a pair of 6" speakers on a wooden box; it actually sounded ok...

I worked at a place where almost everybody had one of those. Not allowed to wear headphones in the plant. Bunjee it to your hi-low and hook a set of alligator clips to the battery, and rock out!

Well sure I do! The overhead nightlight is to help when your fumbling for the switch, or crossing a landmine work area from the rarely used side door to the big button.

Plus the spiders appreciate it!

My sound system is an old Alpine cd player with a 6x9 shoved into an empty tide box with a huge 12VDC wall wart powering it. I have a remote for it so i dont have to go to the back of the garage to turn it on or change channels. I leave the remote on my workbench.

The lights idea is great!!! i have two sets of 8' lights but garage up blocks about 3'

I do have 3 sets of 4' i dont use i could mount to the garage door....Maybe connect all three of them
