FWIW, it doesn't necessarily have to be a 5-speed. The Techumseh-Peerless 700 was available with 3-7 gear ratios, depending on the OEM's needs. I have a 3-speed.

Also- I keep hearing about guys just scraping the grease outta their tranny or transaxle and filling with gear oil. While installing a vent is a lovely idea, I would think that if oil seals are not installed, you'd be constantly topping up the oil level and cleaning up all the oil that has drooled out the unsealed shaft penetrations. Food for thought.

Okay so a guy on Craigslist has a Peerless tranny that he believes is a 5 speed that he is going to sell me for $50. Let me ask though. How low are these types of trannys geared? Will it be hard to get any speed with one?

the racers install a breather to prevent pressure in the case. aside from some permatex or the likes when you seal the case halves

its all sealed up pretty good.

ive done this to 3 remote mount boxes with no leaks and 45mph+

and ive done it to 2 transaxles. over time one transaxle seeped some oil on one axle but thats about it.

and. if you were adamant about it. you could replace the outer axle bearings with ones with seals

but yea stock for stock. abusing the same spec trans with the only dif being filled with grease or oil. the grease one cracked the case

the remote mount trans has some advantages. and disadvantages. on the good side you can gear it easily. the transaxle the only way to go fast is to spin the trans faster.

but filled with oil they dont break from speed. they still break from the torque stress of tall axle ratios and big tires.

so its easier to spin the trans with a cen clutch. and run either a 12T engine 12T trans or 12T engine 9/8T tranny and really use the gears. you will have to as top gear will smoke a cen clutch from a stop

Okay so the tranny I said he was offering me for $50 is actually a transaxle, so it will have two shafts spinning. Do you think I should use this as the two axles on the go kart even though it will be a live axle and have less traction on the road?

If you're going off-road at all, don't. The diff will drive you nuts with the ol' "one wheel peel". On pavement it will be pretty mild-mannered, but don't expect much by way of "driftability". Also- operating with a differential requires special braking consideration. For best results, you need to install a brake on both (axle) shafts. You do not want to brake only one side. The "easy" way to do it is to brake the input shaft, but that has it's ups and downs too. In all honesty, your probably better off not using it and continuing to shop for a tranny.

A hydrostatic trans is great in a tractor, where it belongs. Mine sits behind a 16 hp Kohler and tops out around 8 mph. They are just not made for speed.
