Pedal spring help

This driving me crazy. Please tell me how to hook up this throttle cable to pedal. I have spent soo much time on this and it has outsmarted me. I can't get spring to push pedal back. I can't find a YouTube video of a 11 yr old showing me how easy it is. Please educate me. Also is this a flag holder? Am I missing something?

As long as I'm whinning do the brakes I put on look okay? They look to far out but the band brake rod is too short. I tried with drum that came with it and a different band. This set up was closest to right

That type of spring needs to be on the pivot. One end on the pedal one end on the frame.
Oriented so it increased tension in the direction of pedal travel.
The brake band has to contact the full width of the drum to work right.

Don't put the throttle cable eyelet on the same pivot as the spring. Separate them like this (not my photo):

I understand your frustration but it's not your fault--you inherited the previous owner's problem as the new gas pedal isn't stock/OEM, was not designed for that kart and neither is the gas pedal return spring. Those springs are chiefly a Manco part but can be adapted to fit.

Don't worry too much about a return spring on the gas pedal or right at the gas pedal -- not all karts have them. They often rely on a throttle return spring on the engine [but sometimes in both locations].

I would straighten out the end of the brake rod; you could do it with two large Vise Grips, Crescent wrenches, Channel loc pliers, or something beefy.

As for the brake band and drum, something is off kilter with the spacing and I cannot figure it out. I better review the photos of the kart when you dragged it home...

yes this kart had a throttle rod and they rigged it. Should I go back that route? Should cable be on highest pedal hole or lowest? I hope one i drill a hole in the brake band shaft it will even out. Also old spring pulls on band. Shoot! I can't even figure out how the darn flag holder works. Grandson just might get a puppy and I'll keep kart as yard art.

You need to space the drum into the band more. The band should cover the brake.

Yeah but I don't like doing that. Presumably the brake worked fine before, despite being mangled and bent, and the band covered the drum properly. What has changed?

I like to put things back the way they originally were.

It appears you guys know what you're talking about. I took off new drum b/c I ran out of bolt on hub for more spacing. So I cleaned up original and tell me what you think?

Straightened what way? what is that angle bracket for? Chain guard? So do I have to get something welded for the throttle pedal? I'm super lost on what to do there. I found a welder my father had. Never used it or welded before but what could possibly go wrong?

If ya never welded B4, don't learn on that. Get some scrap.
ya probably just need to drill some holes. Move the cable attachment point higher up the pedal for more travel.try to match the travel needed to open the carb fully. If it is too short the cable will get broken or the throttle plate may get damaged when the throttle pedal gets mashed. Young drivers figure out quickly that the harder ya mash the pedal, the fasrer ya go. Only limit is the strength in the right foot.

Angle bracket is more of a guide for the band. Let’s see what the welder looks like in order for us to advise you on it. Terry is right though don’t practice on the kart. Practice on some scrap metal first.

Hmm, no, but if it were me I probably would because I am usually a stickler for making it the way it is supposed to be. Let's move forward, the throttle cable is fine and re-creating a whole new throttle rod is a project within a project. Aren't you in a hurry?

See Master Hack's post #15. It depends. The position of the throttle eyelet on the pedal can always be changed later. You may need to adjust and fine tune it to make sure there's enough range of motion at the pedal and at the throttle assembly on the engine.

I wasn't sure if that was a flag holder but it appears to be. There's a flag in the same place on another Brister's kart. Not a bad safety item; "bicycle safety flag", especially if you're riding in areas where the kart is obscured by dunes or terrain. You can buy them anywhere.

Bend the angle bracket down til it is horizontal, I say. I think the angle bracket may be to support a chain guard and to keep the brake band in place.
