Will a Briggs engine use up more oil if it over heats?

Also if my engine eats up a lot of oil but does not smoke and has great compression, What could be wrong with it?

What will cause the engine to push oil through the valve case breather?

Oil level too high, dipstick not sealing, gunked-up breather. The crankcase "breather" is actually a one-way valve that restricts airflow from going into the crankcase, resulting in a vacuum that helps control oil, among other things. Check that your breather (the rectangular thing bolted to the side of the engine over the valve springs (assuming a flathead)) is clean, that there is no more than a .045 (iirc) gap between the flapper valve and its seat, and that the two little vent holes along the top / side are clear. Also the rubber hose from the breather to the air filter, make sure it's good and clear.

Let'd also not overlook the possibility of an unnoticed oil leak. If the crank main oil seal on the flywheel side were to leak, you may not ever notice unless you parked on a clean surface for quite some time. Just a thought.

Let's look at this in reverse. Low oil WILL cause an engine to overheat.
