Well, sorta mine. LOL. When I was about 8, my dad had a guy he new build a cheap kart out of used parts for $50. He brought it home. Momma said I could not ride it if she could not. So she tried. She thought the kart was too fast and she screamed. When she went to stop, she got disoriented and ended up throwing her feet out to try to stop. Well, that hurt her legs and she shot down the embankment, across the road and down into the neighbors yard. So needless to say, I had one chance to ride it after they argued. Then momma won anyways. So here we are 30 years later and I have three kids. A 11 year old daughter, a 9 year old son and a 7 year old son. So I loving to tinker got thinking I had a couple of motors, two parts tractors. What could I build. What could I find for a frame. Well, my searches found many crappy small karts for around $150. Then I found this one bigger more solid and much cooler kart. Guy had it listed for $100, then lowered it to $75. I walked out of there $60 later with it. The first four pictures are as it sat. The last couple are after tearing it down to bare bones tonight. First plan of attack is to grind everything down smooth and shiny. Then make mods needed, replace the rear otor plate and add a front roll bar to it. Then start painting in kids choice of color. Then we will rebuild the rest as we go. I was wanting to use my Old Briggs and Stratton cast iron 16HP motor. But, after some thought, I realized that it is probably geared lower since it is a power house! So I think I will go with a low hour 7HP snow king motor off of a snow blower. This is currently a pull start engine. However, I do have a electric start set up for it(110). But, I will want to convert it to battery start if I can. Otherwise, I have a higher use 5 HP Tecumseh. I also have a much older 5HP Briggs off of a old Torro rotory mower. So for power, we will wait and see for sure. I do also have a really nice Briggs 12HP vert shaft. But, I would rather run a horizontal shaft. I am also contemplating useing a mower 6 speed rear end so we can drive it slow or fast and go backwards. Help in parades and rough trails and I can also use it to move several of my trailers around. HEHEHE. So without further ado, here are the pics of my new project for our first kart! Along the way, I will have any questions, so bare with me and hopefully my kids and I can learn a couple of things and have some fun along the way. Hopefully this will turn out to coax us to a couple more scratch built karts. HEHEHE. Oh, one picture also shows a hint of its past. The guy said that it had been used back in the 60's for racing from what he had been told. He thought maybe it was a kit kart. But he had questioned that. Looking at it, I thnk if it was, there had been many mods to it. But I think maybe moe so, it was a scratch built kart? Does anyone know? Thanks.

looks to be factory made with some modifications.

go with the 7hp snow king if it has a 3/4" keyed shaft. you wont really need electric start, but if you want it, find out how many watts the starter draws, then buy a properly sized inverter and battery.

The main tghing we have used to remove the paint and the rust is the grinder. Then we used the wire wheel to get into the "dimples" of rust. Then this little course wheel, not sure what it is called that helps to polish it up with. Certainly not perfect, but is really good and once painted, wont ever know! LOL> Thanks.

Truly adorable. Now put some safety glasses on that kid!

Ya but saying you told me won't bring back his eyesight

:iagree: Using wire wheels throw off a lot of bristles. One can easily get lodged in your kids eye. Grinders also throw off sparks and metal pieces. I am not just making this up. I have had countless pieces of stuff hit me in the face and on my goggles. (I should actually get a full face mask.)

If that were my kid, and they refused to wear protective gear, they wouldn't be helping out. It sounds tough, but I love my kid too much to see them hurt when I could have prevented it.

I couldn't agree more. Besides- who's the parent, here? What you say, goes. He's to young to understand the ramifications of injury, especially to something as precious and irreplaceable as an eye. Tough love time.

Meanwhile, I think it's awesome that you're getting them involved in the work, beats the he// outta being plugged into an Xbox 24/7!

I will interject. Even though he is my youngest at 7, he is more advanced and responsible then even my 12 year old!! He is two grades above his recomended class level. He is just too stuborn like his mother and myself. Trust me, I know about the grinders! I got one in my knee when it hit a burr and soared off on into my knee before it shut off!. I have gotten the metal strings in the face! So I know. We are of the belief that if we teach them right and wrong and try to instill it in them, then we have done our job. It is thier choice after that. My father mae me do a lot and some of the things I resentred him for. I too had to learn the hard way!I know many people would argue with me on this and some probably will try to anyways! We have a autistic child with asburgers(spelling?). We have learned that we really cant force a child anything. In the older sons case, trying to causes dire ramifications that has sent momma to the hospitol and I in pain as he has super powers when he gets pissed and in one of his rages! There is nothing to stop it either at that point except time. About a hours time. Then the youngest starts getting attitude because he is treated so different then his brother. So, we teach them. We give them the tools. We try to protect them without placing them in a bubble. They will learn. This one here I tried to tell not to do wheelies on his bike without hands. Wouldnt listen. Well, after scraping the heck out of his arm four times over in the same spot, he now rides wheelies with hands on the handle bars. He has learned the hard way. Yes, I do agree and understand about the eye thing! I have gotten my own glasses in the corner of my eye. Any further over and I would have lost my eye! So am I concerned, yes. But thats why some of these things, I will not allow them to do unless I am right there to administer firsat aid if need be. They know there is one rule they have to obey or they get blistered. No kids in my barn when I am not there! :2guns:

You're gonna do what you feel is right.I'm gonna disagree. But- just to play Devil's advocate here- Your theory is that if/when he hurts himself, he will learn a lesson. What happens if/when he does something truly dangerous and ends up dead (god forbid). What lesson will he then learn? What lesson will you learn? How will you bring yourself to deal with the concept that the tragedy could easily have been avoided by simply putting your foot down? I couldn't do it- I'd be wracked with guilt until the end of my days.

For clarification- I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm not saying I'm a better parent. I'm just trying to understand your logic which is absolutely foreign to me- special needs, or not.

No work on kart today. So nothing new. For the other comment, I have already dealt with a child dying. It was of sidds. My first born son. Just shy of 6 months. So I know the pain. God WILL take us at any time. If I wear my seatbelt, someone can t bone me and kill me. A friend rolled his truck with his belt on and his head was chopped off. Another one wore his seatbelt. Ditched his van. His toolbox smashed his brains in! I saw a guy wearing all leather and a full faceshield on a motorcycle. A car turned infront of him. He ditched the bike and rammed into a brick wall. Gotr up and was walking around. He took his helmet off and died instantly. It had become a brain bucket because his skull was split wide open. Point being id does not matter the amount of saftey we use. Crap can and will happen! God will take us when he wants. There is nothing we can do. A highschool friend died on his sixteenth birthday because he rode his new motorcycle into a fence doing 35. Got wrapped around a fench and died. I rolled my bike doing 90 a year later. Walked away fine. Yes, I am concerned. Yes I worry. But they learn thier freedom of choice and the difference between right and wrong. I did not have that. Everything was dictated to me. When I left home, I did not know how to deal with life. I partied. I got high and drunk. Flunked college and was arrested several times before I figured out what life was supposed to be about!

Anyways, back to the real topic, the kart. I may have a Kohler 10HP motor coming needing a oil pan. I have one here that is froze up solid, but good oil pan basically. So that may be a idea for this kart. Still would need to figure out gearing etc. once a motor is finially decided upon. Thanks.
