hey guys wsup?!?!? lol i'm just here trying to get opinions and get some research done for the next project. In which i'll be back in school and have the avalability of tools to make a racing kart chassis. But thats not the point i'm thinking of forgetting the small engines and going for 30hp+ so thats what brought me to a sled engine since mc engines can get expensive.
(Not starting till sept.) Few questions

*Is it practical to introduce a forced induction system into a 3cyl. sled engine?

*how much are sled engines?

*where can i find them?

practical meaning cheap? or will you see good gains? most engines are mildly tuned at best, so most upgrades are practical. the crotch rocket engines are probably the most supped up of engines, there's a guy with a 499hp + turbo hayabusa, if that helps.

dont really care for cheap i mean is it a good idea/gains form it. and the turbo hayabusa's are sick love there sound.

heres what i'll tell you, sled engines are a little more difficult to set up than mc engines (but not much at all, you just have to set up a jackshaft). Sled engines are almost all two stroke with the exceptions of the newer ones, and just about every bike engine is a 4 stroke (EPA). So going by that, which do you want? A 4 stroke will have better bottom end, but a 2 stroke will generally be able to wind out more (rev higher). 2 strokes have a much better power to weight ratio than 4 strokes, for example a 125 4 stroke dirtbike would average around 10-15hp whereas a 125 2 stroke dirtbike will put out over 30hp. As for where to find them, check craigslist, tag sales, etc. I saw a 79' pantera 440 (sled) at a tagsale a few weeks ago for 50 bucks, just needed new points, im kickin myself for not getting that.

One other big thing to consider is, do you want to shift? or do you want to just press and go? For me i like shifting, i made a shifter kart once and although it was only 100cc shifting was mad fun.

Personally i would just go for whatever you find cheap, when it comes to putting 30+hp in a race kart, there is no need for a forced induction system, especially if its a sled engine. Say you get yourself a 750 triple sled engine, thats going to have enough power to get you going well over 150mph EASY, the 750 that i got in boxes could push the sled i took it out of around 125 mph, and that thing was almost 600lbs!

thanks for the input kaptain.

i' be trying to build something extremely quick as in scary fast thats why i thought of a turbo sled engine but when i first got the idea i was thinking about using a dirt bike two stroke but i got a bit greedy with speed.

and yes i do want to be able to shift.

cheap... i was going to scrape the junk yard for parts either way.

Did you see the shipping charges on that thing? I would go with a 250 2 cycle. Look around where you live, Ebay has way high shipping charges.

Yea dude i saw a cb900r in craiglist for $150 today. Stay away from ebay, wayy too expensive most of the time.

Again, a lot of money.



Comet used to sell a forward reverse gearbox for karts, it was like $250 or something.

See, deals can be had, just gotta keep an eye out. That would be a nice engine for a kart too, plus you would get a disc brake setup, and probably lots of other odds and ends.

It could also be a pile of sh$$t. I wouldn't buy one without a pic and it would have to run. O hauling these can be expensive.
