I picked up a kart off CL to get together for Xmas. It is set up for a live axle in the rear. My kids will be just driving it in the Ct. we live on and turning around on the street. Will the live axle set up be ok for just road use and tight turns?

It really depends on whether the frontend geometry is anywhere near appropriate. Mine handles exceptionally well on pavement, for a live-axle offroader on turfs. However, with poor geometry, it could very well steer like an ocean liner.
Take it for some loops and figure 8's. That will give you an idea what you're working with. Tire wear will also be accelerated.
If need be, you can convert it to drive one wheel only. Diffuculty depends on current arrangement. Got pics?
