OLD kart rebuild PLEASE help

I have several questions so I am going to include pics so you can see what I am talking about.
1. The engine that came with it was junk so I found this 6.5 hp craftsman engine that looks to be a honda any way I got it home and then I noticed the shaft was tapered making it larger twords the engine. Question does any one know of a clutch that will fit all the way down on the shaft it only goes on so far witch is fine as I was able to use a set screw to keep it on but now I am having to add washers etc to get the breaks ans sprocket to all line up.

2. The brakes were shot they are 4" band breaks so I found all the parts at mfg supply so I thought the drum from the kart has an odd bolt pattern that of course bolts to the wheel its self.

Does any body know what kind of drum and where I can get it?

i dont know about the tapered shaft that seems odd to me, you got hub or band brakes. looks like a good basic cart to me.

sry but unless some one here has a miracle fix, your willing to put in a different crank shaft, or you have access to a machine shop, your engine is useless. you got measurements on them brakes?

EDIT: is it just me or does he have some sort of reduction box on his engine, or is that just a weird engine block?

doesnt look like it, but it is narrow. also your muffler is rotted out.

Griller, have you met Harbor Freight? I'm sure you'll be there eventually for an engine. That looks to be a reduction gear box with a tapered shaft which means, most likely, poor performance, if it's even able to engage the clutch.

I took it out one time and it seems to preform better than well I would say Way to fast. the clutch is on the shaft with a set screw i added I was just hoping to find a way to line it up better right now I will be offsetting the wheel and brake assembly with some flat axels on the axel. the engine was off a power washer.

R97 what measurments on the breaks are you asking for? the on pic has the old drum silver and the replacement black...

so the clutch is on a tapered shaft? or is it just stepped down from 1" to say 3/4 bore

the clutch is in the shaft 3/4 it only starts to taper twords the engine there is enough straight shaft for it to attach to via side set screw

ohhhh, you still should have a better way of attaching your clutch to the shaft other than set screw. i was wondering what the bolt circle was. that box still looks fishy to me, but you say the clutch still engages?

yeah the clutch engages I was just hoping to find a way to make the engine and the rrake and every thing else line up. But I am gonna leave it alone for now and more than likly pick up a HF engine soon as possible. Do you know will the hf engine line up better it had a 3.5 Tecumsehoriginnally

may not line-up better but it will transfer power wayyyyyy better

Dear Friend;

Does the engine shaft have a hole that a bolt could be used and is the shaft keyed? If so bolt on the clutch and the taper will prevent the clutch going further on the shaft.

I think your application of the clutch looks OK. The only concern is the allen screws will not hold the clutch on that shaft for long.you need a bolt into the engine shaft.

May I sugguest Harbor Freight for $99.00 you get s NEW 6.5hp OHV engine that I have put 6 on karts sofar, They are great engines for the money. This will solve your engine problem and give your hours of engine free worries.
