I'm an old guy from southeastern Wisconsin. Ever since we moved out here to 5 acres and my daughter started producing grandsons, I've been wanting to build a go cart. Now that I'm semi-retired, I'm finally getting a start on it.

A while back a friend gave me an old elliptical and I have cut it up and welded a frame together, loosely based on the Black Widow from Spidercarts.com - I downloaded the plans when they were still free.

Anyway, I have the frame welded together and bought a riding lawnmower for wheels and tires. I ordered stuff from MFG supply for the axle and steering gear. I have an old HM80 Tecumseh off a snowblower that I bought new back in the early 90s.

I have some pics, but they are on my cell phone - now that I have the thread started, maybe I can get them uploaded.

I have been able to answer most of my questions from reading here on the forum, so thanks to everyone who has posted their problems and resolutions over the past several years.

The top pic is most of the pieces from the elliptical I was given.

The third pic is the wheels set up against the frame with the engine sitting on a board laid across the back of the frame.

Looks like your cart is off to a good start. Watch the frame strength and gearing with those large tires. It will be a fun ride. Jim D.

Thanks - I hear you about frame strength - I have a friend who says that the material from the elliptical won't want to hold welds without cracking, and I'm more of a grinder than a welder  to begin with.

As far as gearing, I'm trying to put it at about 15 to 20 MPH at 3600 RPM - I'm planning to put a jackshaft on it which I thought would also let me do some quick speed swapping as well if I want to.

I had a rolling chassis for a little while this afternoon, until the tack weld on one of the front spindle hangers let go.

I think i might redo the rear axle, I'm not sure it's square and I can get another inch of wheelbase.

Welcome.

Why don't you Write 2016 DIYGK PreztAls on a sign and see if you can enter this in the contest?

Anyhow, you might get more help if this were moved to a different section. Most of the helpful people read this section, but not everybody.
