I have a old briggs 3.5 Im looking for a way to beef it up a lil for the kids... starts first or second pull... old model that you have to pull out a lever to kill it.

With out removeing the govoner you could put a new high flow K&N airfilter, & a new straight pipe exaust

measure the snout on the carb. with the air filter off. and maybe a 5hp briggs upgraded filter fits? measure to be sure.
for the exhaust... is the exhaust port threaded? if so, you can get a 20" or so pipe, with threads on the end, (hardware store) and just screw it into the exhaust port tight. you will need to make a muffler brace so that to be sure it wont break off.
again, on this, a 5hp briggs upgraded header may fit.

Pull the governor. Depending on how old this is it may have a centrifugal gov. or an air one.
Depending on how much time/money you want to spend on this little motor, you can do many more mods.
See the sticked "5hp guide" in the engines and clutches section- most things will apply to your motor.

Just out of interest, how does an air governer work

The cooling fan's (flywheel) air, flow's past a vaine that is hinged so it will move with the air flow. This vaine has linkage to the throttle plate, and is regulated with a spring, this spring is connected to the hand throttle. The spring tension increases or decreases the amount of air flow required to maintain RPM.
Hope this makes sense.

its is a treaded exhuast what size is it that I would need

1/2 inch pipe, is what it is called but nothing about it is 1/2 inch.Pipe is measured by the inside dia. but due to modern mfg. the pipe wall can be made thinner, But in order to use the same fittings, the inside dia was increased by 1/8 inch. therfore 1/2 inch pipe now is 5/8 inch inside. My point is ask for 1/2 inch but don't go into the store and try to measure.
