Ognibs buggy build

The beginning of the story is here.

http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=34460

Today I'm mocking some material for layout of the main front & rear crossmembers. Design elements will be like the panels for the side rails for visual continuity.

I'm working with aluminum rather than steel, for a couple of reasons:

I know the guy who owns a large metal recycling business & he has a half acre of aluminum piled around, at least. Industrial off cuts etc. He lets me in to dig around & sells to me for, depending on the market, about $1.00 lb.

Secondly, I've become a fan of the construction techniques used on the WW2 heavy bombers. Light weight materials, gussets, spars & lots of rivets. Capable of heavy loads & stresses.
Thought it'd be different to try it on this project & see what I can do with it.

It's the weekend.
I've located 2 motorcycle salvage operations within reasonable driving distance.
Going shopping for a drive train for this thing. :)

Hi Randy, thanks for looking...appreciate the comments.

I'm adding an inner set of rails to manage the engine, driveline weight & torque.
Will be lightened to match the sides of the cage.

What I have shown here is 14 lbs. Not sure what driveline weight will be.
I'd like to see a total vehicle weight of around 100 lbs, with at least 20 hp in power...cause it's all about power to weight & I want it to jump up & down & spin around when I nail it!!
But I'm just semi-informed guessing at this point.

I've noticed in a few threads, request for thumbnail pics. If my stuff is too large, please say so & I'll figure out how to reduce their size. :)

Photobucket is not loading the photos on my end (what pics!?) and no one likes PB. Reconsider uploading them to DIYGK so they will always be here.

From the manage attachments feature, below the reply box?
Will it size them properly?

It will size them in thumbnail size for previewing, but will expand once clicked upon. Give it a go!

I reloaded my previous post. Is that ok? If so, I'll go back & change the others as well. :)

Yep, lowering weight has the same performance effect as does adding power.
It reaches a tipping point where traction...getting it to the ground effectively...becomes a key factor in the equation.

Case in point: any AA fuel dragster or funny car.

What I'm planning will be more like the old short wheelbase fuel altereds. Fast & squirrelly as all get out. But with a sprint kart look.

LOL, yesterday, I looked at an overhead cam, inline 750cc 4 cyl honda with 5 speed for a very attractive price. It is way to large physically for my chassis package. Otherwise, I was seriously attracted to that engine. :)

ItSid, you mentioned window regulators for steering on this thing.
Any particular models that You could suggest as a starting point in my research?
Thanks.

Getting settled in to the new house & finally a bit of time for getting my shop set up.
Still a bit cluttered & not quite organized.

8' of new bench space, a build table for the project in the center with accessibility on all 4 sides & a bench for my mill with roller slide drawers for tooling.

Also, my buddy & administrative assistant, Lou thu dawg.

A little more shop development.

Boxed in around the mill to help with chip containment.
I broke down all of my benches & shelves when I moved & I've still got some odd sized pieces for stuff like this.
I build with screws rather than nails, so it all came apart very cleanly & easily.

Plus, the light colored sides help with light saturation on the work area.

My collection of tooling is growing slowly but constantly.

Being an old guy with a young mans mind trapped inside, I didn't get my first computer until I was in my 50's.
So I'm kinda excited that I figured out how to set up an account with utoob without any help from the kids.
I've got one vid uploaded...this is a test just to see how it works.

A quick update on what's happening on the project.

I'm actively shopping for the right engine at the right price for this thing.

The plan is for independent suspension front & rear. Set up to run on asphalt & to turn both right & left.

Been reviewing this book, shown in attachments below, which I've owned for 20 yrs, at least. Carroll Smith prepared cars have won LeMans & the manufacturers world championship, piloted by notable drivers such as Andretti, Foyt, Gurney & others.

The principles contained therein apply just as well scaled down as in 1:1.

Also found this physics forum which has this large thread on the science & engineering of race suspensions.

https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/race-car-suspension-class.326355/

Got the last of my benchwork built. Still have shelves to build but not until I've got good insulation in the walls.
Here's a vid of the current shop configuration.
