new thx in advance

building my son a go kart and it has a 1" axle with a funky jack rigged up. what i need to know is if i can buy an axle that has a keyway fully down the length of so i can remove the jack shaft and put a sprocket directly on the axle in line with the clutch gear and just run straight to the axle with the chain. also does anyone know where i can find 9" rims for standard go kart front hubs?

You can get fully keyed 1" shafts, but you might be better off with your current setup. To have the kart geared properly without the jack-shaft you will probably need a huge axle sprocket.

yes, but i want it to be as simple as possible, therefore didn't want the jackshaft setup. i was going to use a 72 tooth rear gear with a #41 chain and clutch setup to go with those rear wheels. i want to change the fronts to a skinnier tire that same height or close to it in the front, but am having a problems finding tires for the 8" rims in the front. which is why i was also trying to find info on where i can find front rims for a standard go kart hub in a 9" size.

Just how big are those rear tires? You may not fully understand the issue here- which is: if you eliminate the jackshaft and/or CVT, you will likely not be able to gear correctly for the situation. Sure enough, you can buy a race-quality clutch that might tolerate the copious amounts of slip required, but at what cost? Possibly poor performance. Possibly premature clutch failure. Possibly too much available top speed for however old your son is. Or- maybe just not enough torque from your engine to make it all happen.

I would use that jackshaft set-up. Get a sprocket for the jackshaft and a clutch for the engine. You'll have a reasonable shot at it being inexpensive and working.

if you want it to be able to go off road you will need more ground clearance, so you can put a smaller sprocket on the axle and make up for it using the jack shaft

the tires are about 20-22" tall. i see what your saying about clearance, meaning the sprocket would possibly hit while riding. that sucks because i really didn't want to have to rebuild the jack shaft that was obviously homemade and not very well done. the dang sprocket for it looks to have been welded on before it broke off. it is threaded internally still but i will have to grind the rest of the weld off to make it usable again. by the way i'm ising the briggs predator 212cc from harbor frieght for the engine. any idea's for the front rims? :roflol::roflol:

oh, also i will then have to replace the sprocket out by the rear rim also since it looks rough. so basiclly i will have to replace clutch, get a chain to the jack shaft, a new sprocket for jack shaft and a new sprocket by the wheel and a chain to match those two sprockets. oh well thats usually how it works.

I have the same tires on the rear of my kart. I have an 8hp briggs and use a 40 series comet tc and driven. I think you could use a 30 series comet tc and driven with the 6.5hp. Also if you have a welder you could buy a jackshaft kit and remove the homemade job and weld on the new one.

A tc and driven is made for off road since you stop and go so much and have much better torque while going up hills. If you use a Cet. Clutch it will slip and wear out quick using it off road like others said above.

Here's my tc set up with jackshaft. driven sprocket on the chain side of the jack shaft is a 12t. The axel sprocket is a 55t.

thanks guys. Kiet awesome pic and info. seeing such a similar situation really helped. i guess i will have to goto the more expensive route, but hopefully it will be worth it in durability. does anyone know where i can find 9" rims that are for standard front go kart hubs as i can't find 18-20" skinnier tires to fit my existing 8" rims. Kiet can you tell me what size and where u got that funky belt pully on the engine side of your jack shaft? also if you don't mind what are the exact specs on your whole drive train in that picture, as i think i will just duplicate your system if you don't mind. yours obviously works and that would take alot of guess work out since i have no idea of what to ask for when i go to order gears, pulleys, and sprockets. (for example 52 tooth ?????? blah blah rear drive sprocket??????) sorry like i said i know next to nothing about go karts. i have every confidence i can do everything myself, but no confidence i can order everything right the first time. :) since i am on a tight budgett on this and really need to do this right as i'm trying to get my son off his computer before all his muscles attrophy and he turns into a vampire for lack of son light. :) :mad2: thx again guys awesome info
