One question-

Is this your only, full time residence?

I have been looking into off grid, and have discovered that in many cases it is impossible to get 'permission' from the government to live on a property without utilities if it is your only address. Closest I know personally is a friend of mine in northern Michigan who has solar and wind power, artesian well, septic system and a pellet stove setup for heat. He has so far in 9 months generated 1 Mw of electricity. He still has to have a power line to the utility pole to get a certificate of occupancy, if he disconnects the township will condemn the home. Costs $8/ month for the power line hookup.

Yeah I'm curious on that as well. Colorado is one of the states that makes it illegal...one more reason I won't travel there. Personally, generating your own power should be good enough to satisfy big brother.

Great pics keep them coming. Do you have a cesspool? Where is the water source? Hauled in I'm assuming? Maybe I missed the picture. Rainwater collection + UV would probably do you right.

Heck of a good start.
My place has been off grid forever.
Going on 21 years now.
The wife and I built our home by ourselves. And I do mean by ourselves.

The work is never done.

My wife wants to build an earth ship. I dunno about all that, but I would like to build a house before I die.

I heard Colorado also made it Illegal to collect Rain water from your own roof!
If not Colorado it is Illegal in of of those Western States.
California will Pay for a rain water collection System up to $300

That's what I don't get. Where does the state get the right to dictate who can own or collect what? Just like Wyoming taxing the wind from the Mountains because I guess the state owns that too. Overbearing much?

Don't quote me, but I think Utah is the same on rain water.

Washington state, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, and Virginia all have laws about collecting rain water.

It's a free resource...wtf?

Water promised to other states. It's like here. I own, and have paid off my 80 acres, but I only own the top nine inches.
Mineral rights belong to a railroad or something.

Power corrupts! Absolute Power Corrupts absolutely!

That is why We 'Mericans have the 4th Amendment!

My Dad has a well and water rights to his Property. His neighbor had water rights and No Well. Two years ago they decided in His county, that any and all "new" wells would get a meter and you get a bill! But people "owned" their water rights! Uh what!!!

8 cords of wood? Dang. Our firewood shed holds 1.5-2 cords of wood. So you really have to stack that wood deep. For those who don't know how much a single cord is, it's 4ft wide by 4ft tall by 8ft long or 128 cubic feet.

A designer knows he has achieved perfection, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Rule number one when living off grid: Never raise your hand, or draw attention to yourself.

Rule number two: Most often it's easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.
