Odyssey with Bombardier Engine

Hello all,

Recently got my first go kart in a very long time.

I've been looking for a couple of months now. My dad finally came across an old odyssey and said that he would hurt himself on it, so now it's mine!

From what i can tell (and i most certainly could be wrong) is that it is an FL250 from the 80's with a Bombardier snowmobile motor on it. 400cc? Also, it is a 2 cylinder.

Since it needs a few parts before it's running and I won't have electricity in my garage to run my welder I thought i'd get your input on it.

Any creative ideas, pics, or links to other odysseys will be considered and appreciated.

* Some ideas that i already have in mind before i ever drive it are going to be to relocate the radiator to the back so i don't take a shower in boiling water at some point, and installing a fan or two on the radiator.
* Above the headrest on the seat where the radiator is currently mounted i'm building a small and thin metal air duct so that the radiator and air breathers can get fresh air and still be mounted in the rear.
* I need to come up with some type of air breather assembly. Considering an aftermarket air intake from autozone with a Y pipe into both carbs or possibly 2 small filters? The air filter will be mounted near the radiator somewhere out back.


Aside from any and all creative input and ideas that you folks have i do have a couple of questions that are stumping me.

1. Wiring. i have some idea of what i'm doing, but i need to know what wire is what from the motor. Is there a guide with these or should i email Bombardier and beg?

2. I would really like to get this thing to charge a battery. Electric start is something i would enjoy, but it's not necessary. However, running enough lights around that thing so that it glows like the freaking sun is.

2. There are also a couple of oil lines that my dad found and was a little confused by. I forgot to check them out, but if anyone knows about such lines it would be helpful also.

3. How big of a fan do i need to keep this beast cool? Any ideas would narrow it down. I plan to purchase a cheap electric fan or 2 based on the CFM they put out and how much i need more so than the size.

While I don't know a precious thing about your particular engine, a guess: Those oil lines could be because it is an oil-injected 2-stroke. Instead of mixing oil in the gas, you put it in a separate tank, and the engine feeds itself. You therefore need a line going from the tank to the pump, and quite possibly 1 or 2 external lines going to various lubrication points.

Our resident Odyssey expert goes by the name of Bighead. He's not very active these days, and I think he travels- but if you send him a private message, he'll likely get back to you in a bit. You can Try FatCat, too- I think he knows Odys.

It's an 83 or 84 FL250. The radiator is in a good location. Fuel tank is a very nice piece. Appears this guy knew what he was doing. That's a rotax 440. Very nice engine. That other tank is an oil tank for oil injection. This is important if its a rotary valve. If you premix the fuel this needs to be ran in a closed loop on the engine because it keeps the rotary valve bearings in a bath of oil. This setup looks nice to me. Should be a wheelie machine for sure. Maybe some UNI clamp on pod filters for the carbs. Avoid K+N's. I'd try to find silencers of some sort. It'll be deafening how it is now. Fan maybe a universal of some sort. Radiators a little small but should do. Add a temp guage and keep an eye on it before changing it up. Route the overflow lines away from you but preferably where you can see if its coming out.

roflmao, i thank you all for your help. the guy my dad bought it from is apparently into some serious grown up toy building. i especially thank you for the engine id'ing. dad says the gas tank is worth more than the kart. lol. and the guy that built it swears it will pull a wheelie over backwards. we fired it up one time the other day. my ears still hurt. gotta find some mufflers... can't wait!

Could probably find some used 250cc dirt bike silencers and quiet it down and still look good. I have no doubt it will wheelie. If its running right its going to be a scary ride. Get good belts and wrist restraints and hang on!! Pretty sure that rotax makes more than an arctic cat 440.... It's in the 70's for sure with the twin pipes.

That's definitely going to be loud with open stingers. One thing you should check is to see if those pipes have internal stingers or if they were on the can. Just stick your finger in the end of the pipe and feel if the pipe opens up or if it stays the same diameter as the exit.
