O2, Or Not?

This has been bugging me for years. I keep seeing Oxygen referred to as 02. Now, it's been quite awhile since science class, and I don't profess to be anything other than a pretty handy guy, but-

Oxygen is a base element, yes? Therefore, one Oxygen molecule is one Oxygen molecule, yes? Oxygen appears on the Periodic Table as "O", yes?

So whatinhell is O2? Wouldn't that be TWO Oxygen molecules? What does that make? Oxygen? No- 'cause oxygen alone is Oxygen, yes?

BTW- My name is Chris, and I am NOT smarter than a fifth grader...

O doesn't really exist for very long in nature because it has only 6 electrons. It reacts with almost anything that it comes in contact with.

O2 is simply two oxygen atoms double bonded together to complete their outer shells. The atmosphere we breath is 20% O2. There is no O in the atmosphere, or anywhere else for that matter.

I do also know that the "air" we breathe is largely made up of Nitrogen.

lol what we breath is air. Air is a mixture of a lot of elements. 16-20% of air is oxygen. Fishies don't breath water, they breath the oxygen in the water.

I have always felt that the brain was like a bucket. You keep pouring things in, but sooner or later, the bucket gets full. You can keep pouring, but some of what you had is gonna start overflowing to make room as the new stuff comes in. I've spilled a lot...

me toooo... i was taught spanish up to grade 7. then french 8-10 now. and im still so mixed up. i speak half french half spanish, and all english
