Swapped out the jackshaft assy. on the Murrary Hard drive for a new knock-off TAV2 with a 7" driven. It's a 5.4:1 after the TAV (we have the sprocket to do 6:1 and 6.7:1 if need be). It takes off decent but then lays down a bit but picks up speed on the flat.Going up a hill seemed real "doggy", so we moved the driven spring to the tighter hole I believe to keep it from opening too soon.

It's connected to a modified blue HF clone. Stock carb minus fileing the throttle shaft and a rejet. Gov. has been removed and a flat top piston, billet rod, flywheel and cam added with 18LB springs, short exhaust with the long thinner Briggs muffler.

We've only put maybe 3 miles on it but there seems to be a fair amount of belt "powder" inside the frame and on the frame behind the driven pulley. Wasn't sure if we are overpowering the TAV belt or if a certain amount of wear is to be expected. The pulleys weren't shiney smooth new wondering if they need "worked" in or if like i said we are over powering things.

Thanks for any insight.

You are pushing the limit for that tav. You probably have 10hp there.
Check alignment and pulley centre distances. They should be pretty much perfect.

If you shred the belt, get a genuine one. They are higher quality.
You can also try the 6.7:1 ratio. If you want more speed, just mod the motor for a higher rpm powerband. What diameter tyres do you have?

You probably need to regear. If you can, maybe change your ratio to 6.4:1 or 7.4:1.
