Did I not state that older tecumseh's were probably better quality?Back in the day, Tecumseh were right up there with B&S & Honda, why else would there be sooo many of their engines on everything from lawn mowers to go karts but, there must be a good reason why they went out of business but B&S are still going strong.
I have no problem conceding that point but, without personal experience, I can't comment on how good or bad they are. My issue here is that the idea of this forum, like all others, is to provide unbiased help & advice to others based on our own knowledge & experience.
As a result of your personal experience, you now have the opinion that all Tecumseh engines are rubbish &, therefore, IMO, you can't provide an unbiased opinion on the subject.
Here's the problem:
This thread isn't about you or me, it's about minichoper &, all things considered, what's best for him!
I'm not saying you're wrong or right, everyone is entitled to their opinion but, it seems, lately, everytime I see the word "Tecumseh," I see you posting "it's rubbish, get rid of it" or words to that effect; that, to me, isn't an unbiased opinion
I like the way you think![]()
Not to say they're bad engines but they were also a cheaper alternative than to running a honda or B&S.
A forum is a place to voice your opinions if I feel a motor is junk I'm not going to stand around and have some guy dump his money and time into an engine. If he wants to rebuild the engine chances are either he is asking how to or he has already decided to. I have building experience on engines I'm assuming you do too so you would probably try to save an engine, I would too if it's what i consider a good engine. I have knowledge and experience on the 6-6.5hp tecumseh engines that come stock on these karts along with the robin that is currently on it. I did not state that all tecumsehs' are junk had I, there wouldn't be a post saying that older tecumseh were probably better engines. I have no experience with older models or even the bigger models, but i know that every single tecumseh I have owned has had an aluminum sleeve which with steel piston rings WILL lead to unnecessary wear and premature loss of compression which occurred in most of my engines.
I've also felt the power difference between a tecumseh (so you're happy 6-6.5hp) and the robin my kart was sluggish and no fun with the tecumseh i put a robin on the same kart no mods other than the engine, it would burn out, do donuts, drift anything that requires enough power to break the tires loose. I find this more fun and since it's a stock engine instead of a built engine long life should occur.
