Ok, so someone give me a 2 minute dissertation on the governer. To my untrained eye, it appears to function as a simple mechanical rev limiter. True?

If so, can I defeat it by disconnecting that linkage? Obviously this would demand some throttle self control to avoid floating valves. And at the end of the day, I may leave it alone. But I do want to learn.

Thanks.

if you disable it get in the case and remove all of it, the gear is plastic and can damage your engine if it comes apart at new high rpm... sorry, the first question, rev limiter? yes

Been playing with small engines for a while, from experience it's not a very good idea to disable the governor on most small engines.

There are a myriad of ways to do it safely, including "intelligent" use. Is is certainly a risky endeavor, but you shouldn't run into too many issues if you use the ungoverned engine responsibly.

Ok, time to resurrect this thread for another question.
What kind of results does a stage 1 upgrade kit yield?
I'm talking about an aftermarket air filter, exhaust, .037 jet and 8 degree timing advance. is a 10% improvement a realistic expectation?

Then that is probably 80 dollars well spent. I'm curious about the jet. Why don't they put the right jet in the carburetor to begin with? Just fyi, I'm at 1,300 ft, so nowhere near the 4,000 mentioned in the manual.

Because they jet it to make the rated hp output at 3600rpm. And fuel economy/epa /smog/whatever else they can think of....
