Noob looking for advice

Hello Everyone,
I have a B&S 250cc engine I didn't have a use for. So I have been thinking of something to use it on. I thought about a small one person air boat, Bar stool racer, just a bunch of different things. I was watching tv one day and saw a powered cooler. It had a 49cc engine. The engine was inside the cooler. In my opinion its a waste of valuable drink space. So I decided on building a Cooler kart with a cooler between 100 & 120 quart. I'm not looking for speed. Thinking with a cooler that big its going to be heavy when loaded down. If I could get 20-30 mph that would be great. I want the engine outside the cooler in the rear. I'm not sure what type of drive system to use. Centrifugal clutch, Torque Converter, Jack shaft or what? I don't want to whole thing to be overly wide. I thought about using a donor kart and cut it down the length and width to stretch or shorten as needed. I want to keep this as economical as possible. I'm also not quite sure how to set up the throttle cable at the engine. I removed the fuel tank to see the throttle linkage. I could really use some recommendations on tires as well. Oh just an FYI I payed less than $5 for the engine, and it runs. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Use a smaller engine. You'll still kill yourself with it, but that way you might not be so mangled your mama can't ID you.

a 6.5 hp engine will bush a 200lb cart with 250lbs in it at about 40 so i think u have some major over kill with that engine

You missed the point, he has this engine & wants to use it...

That's a bargain, I'd want to find a use for it too but, as you see from the comments above, I'm not sure this is it...

The thing to remember about cooler/barstool karts is they have a much higher COG (Centre Of Gravity) than a standard kart, a wide stance will help balance that out & make it less likely to roll or flip. IMO, making a "square" wheelbase (so track = wheelbase) is the way to go but, coould be very limiting in terms of space to fit a large cooler & a large engine

Holly cow I had no idea!!! Ok that is why I was asking. I'm definitely not going to do something stupid. I appreciate your input. How about some ideas on something I could use the engine on. Since B&S doesn't use HP anymore on their smaller engines and most other people and companies do. Does anyone have any ideas what the HP is? I am thinking about 8.

i havnt figured out any way to go from the ccs to hp ive tried to figur out how many ccs my 16 hp is id say ur right around the ball park at 8 but u may b shy by a few hp. this motor would b bad *** on a real cart like a buggy time cart, or if you get into those ones that all the go kart tracks have with the realy low cog and light it would run like a bat outa hell

Point taken. The engine came from a pressure washer. It was returned to the place I work and it was sent out for repair. The repair center that does all our service said that it was to expensive to repair. So my company sold it for $50. Three of us wanted it. One wanted the wand and hose, the other wanted just the pump. They each were willing to pay $25 for their parts. I payed the tax and got the frame, engine and wheels. The only thing that I could find wrong with it is that the muffler broke off from the mounting flange. It runs a little rough but does run. Well I'll just keep it for now and keep thinking of something to use it on.

I'd say you're right on the money, 8-9hp; what size is the PTO shaft? If it's 1" (which I suspect it probably is) a drive system will cost you a small fortune...

I wouldn't worry about the broken muffler, it'll run better with a straight pipe anyway...

As for what to use it on, have a look around for an engineless dingo or similar. Other than that, you could always flip it for a profit...

The PTO is 3/4. I could flip it but I'm having a harder time letting it go than figuring out something to do with it.

That's surprising, it must be rated @8hp then; a 3/4" clutch will only handle 8hp

It's most likely about 8HP,
the 205cc enine of that series has 7.5, the 305cc engine 9HP, this is a 250cc so 8HP make sense.

And no, some 3/4" clutches can handle a lot more than 8HP, they do cost about the same as the engine though

There is no direct correlation between displacement (cc or ci) and horsepower, so if you're looking for a formula or conversion- forget it.

As long as you stay within one engine type (say, OHV industrial) you can guess pretty safely. A 6.5hp tends to be about 200cc, an 8hp is about 240cc, and a 9hp about 270cc.

Remember that these are ballpark ranges, and there's a lot of variables involved.

What does the 11.5 stand for? I was thinking that was the horsepower. At 8 it's not as bad, but due to the high CG, anything faster than 10MPH is downright scary. Don't get me wrong I saw Stacy David build a barstool racer with a 350 Chevy, but that was a kit, and the weight of the motor lowered the CG.

That's the peak torque rating. That's a marketing ploy, too- they count on someone seeing 11.5 and thinking it's more impressive.

I have a coworker that has a old Kart without an engine. I'm trying to get it from him. I haven't seen it yet. All I know is that it has small tires. He should be working tomorrow. If I can get him to sell it to me I will try to get some pics and post them. I could probably use some advice on different things then.

You could still use that motor, just build a jackshaft assembly and gear it so its slow but has the torque to pull around a full 120q ice chest , up slopes ,hills, ect..... That's a pretty heavy load so the motor would come in handy. He££ ,why not add a small BBQ pit hanging from the back. Ultimate party wagon......
