As you can tell by the title i am starting a go kart project and i don't know a lot to do it i know some stuff but not enough to finish it by myself. So my go kart frame is an Old one i bought off craigslist for $100 Go Kart.jpg this is an old picture of the frame before i put flanges and bearings i will get an updated one by 4 Pm EDT as well as photos of tires and an engine i have also got thrown in for free. The engine is a working 8Hp Briggs and Stratton Generator engine and im hoping i can use it on the go kart as i dont really have the money for a new engine the 2/4 tires are sand tires that i do not plan to use but the other 2 are Atv tires that are 18" or more(I cannot check right now as it is to late at the moment) but when i get pictures i will post them below. I do not see how i can use the atv tires on the 1" axle i have but im sure you guys know a solution. Thats about it for now like i said i will be posting pictures later on today so yee.

Go Kart Pictures & Questions

Go Kart Back Axle.jpg

The first one here is the back axle of the go kart mounted, this axle is bent, and the thread is screwed up i am getting a new one soon.

Go Kart Engine Shaft.jpg

These pictures show the 8 Hp Briggs and Stratton Generator Engine. This engine is fully working, and i want to use it, But i don't know if i can fit a clutch to the Shaft because it looks as if it is a tampered shaft. If you know a way to fit a clutch to it it would be very helpful.

Go Kart Tire.jpg

The next picture here is the Tire i want to use(I have 2 of them), the tire size is 22 x 10-10 but looking at the middle i don't know how i am going to fit the tires on my 1 Inch Axle.
Any help on that would be great as well.

That is why we don't suggest using generator engines, they're just about all tapered shafts...

You really only have 3 options (from worst to best):
- machine the shaft to straight
- replace the crankshaft with a straight one (both of these options involve tearing down the engine)
- find another engine

Just looked at the price for a straight shaft and its $230! so i guess i'm gonna get a predator 212 because i see them used a lot in go kart builds and they are easily mod able .

That's what I would do ;)

Just another point to think about, if the B&S was a straight shaft, clutches start at around $100 as it would be a 1" shaft...

Yeah good point also do you think a $300 budget is good enough to finish the go kart without Engine + Clutch?

You should come close...

Also i still need to know about mah wheels!

The problem is i cant find hubs to them

Well, there goes your $300 budget...

If you can't find hubs to fit those wheels, you have 2 choices:
1. find new wheels that will work or
2. make hubs...

We don't usually start a new thread of every little question, especially when it's already been asked; please keep all relevant questions to the same thread...

Second pic, measure across, go center of hole to center of hole.

Those are atv rims though, meaning the chances of you finding hubs to fit a regular kart axle are slim to none.

You can find adapters though, but they are pretty expensive.

Yeah i figured this out, but i was able to add in a new pair of wheels into the budget. And question, when i put my sprocket do i need locking collars on both sides of it?

Is it just me, or is only the first inch or so of that shaft tapered? if it's a 1" straight shaft going down to a 3/4" taper at the very end (I've seen this before) you could either 1: cut off the taper part at the end or 2: use a spacer that will cover the span from the bolt to where the taper ends.

You could then take the $ you were going to use for a 212 pred and instead put that towards a t/c. Being an 8hp a 30 series should be fine, iirc 8hp is the max for the 30 series. If not there is a 40 series knock off floating about around ebay I found not too long ago for a little more than $100.
