Newbie with the first of many questions

Starting a project with my 13 yr old son and I think we may have found the used kart we are going to pursue.

Found it on CL and it was identified as a Manco Dingo and based on my research that appears accurate. Not sure of the vintage, but it is described as having working brakes, straight frame and a new seat. The tires look to be in pretty good shape and they reportedly hold air. The guy is asking $175 for the kart - does that seem to be a reasonable price?

Also, planning on running the Predator 212 engine once we get it cleaned up - any reason I wouldn't want to go that direction? Would this seem to be a setup hat could be handled by a 13 yr old - not too fast or slow?

Yea the pred 212 is the way to go. Also the speed and power is all about the gear ratio from the clutch to the shaft sprocket, might want to look a torque converter also.

Yes that is a good deal and Yes with a 212 predator you will be in good shape. With the larger rear wheels you will probably need a TC, not just a centrifugal clutch.

Heading down Weds to get it. Is a torque converter significantly higher on the difficulty meter?

If we are looking for simplicity out of the gate, would downsizing the rear tires also be a reasonable option?

You can definately downsize the tyres. This will make the use of a centrifugal clutch more realistic. A TC is used for large tyres and karts

Arrrgh....the seller sold it out from under me. Had rented a trailer and was heading down in the AM.

Suffice it to say I have a disappointed 13 yr old. Will spare you all the profanity that I have been muttering for the past 30 minutes.

you can try a few tricks on craigslist (if that is what you are using)

try searching for these different phrases

gokart
go kart
go-kart
go cart
gocart
go-cart
manco
carter
murray
yerfdog

there are bound to be more results in one of these variations that nobody searched for.

I feel your pain, but there are always more options (you missed out on a great go kart too so just adding a little salt)

Also, it might be a good idea to call some scrap yards/recyclers as they sometimes get old go karts. Landfills that recycle sometimes have a metals section, and they stash karts away in piles too.
