Newbie with a used kart..

Hi all! Thought I would jump in an say hello and hopefully this is a good place to get started with a few questions... First off - I'm a 31 year old dad from Georgia that was desprived of a Go Kart when I was growing up, so I'm going to live vicariously through my son! I bought a 2 seat kart super cheap locally, but it needs a little work.

1)The genius I bought it from painted the engine with high temp paint... Is that going to be an issue? Seems like it might hold in heat with that extra paint layer on there, since it's air cooled.

2) The engine is missing the recoil for the pull starter, among other things. It needs a throttle cable and he says the carb needs a little work. It did fire up the other night, so I know it runs. I think it's a 5HP Briggs but since it's painted it's hard to make out any info on it! Any ID help? I attached a couple of pics here.

hi welcome, definitely looks like a briggs. as for the paint, it may not be an issue other than possibly having to change the jet. keep a check on your oil, and pay attention to any misfires/predetonations. if you start hearing them, you'll know

Layers of paint will make no difference what-so-ever.
I'm just curious as to why high temp paint was used at all. Any off the shelf semi-gloss enamel works fine as long as engine is absolutely free of oil, grease, dirt, etc.

Thanks for the replies folks! I have no idea why he used high temp paint, but that's what he said he used. As you can see, it's a pretty half-*** job - he got the chain and some parts of the frame when he did it, and as you may have noticed in the 2nd pic he shot the wheels with some white too, and over-sprayed it on the tires! Oh well, I paid $50 for it, so I can't complain too much!

Update - the sticker with the model info is completely toast. Might be able to do something to recover it, but I don't have a whole lot of hope for it.

Anyhow, here's a couple of pics (from my cell phone) of the rest of the motor - any idea which model it is, or more specifically, what pull starter I need? I'd really like to get that replaced because you get one shot to start the motor and if it fails you have to re-wind the pull cord and try again, plus it's missing a bearing or something because every now and then the starter kind of disengages and you have to monkey with it.

need to clean the starter bearing, its like a 1 way bearing assembly there are videos posted on youtube on how to do it.. and as far as the starter goes,

Thanks for the info Suburban.. The previous owner says he tried to take it apart in his yard and (there were something like 5 bearings in there), and a few of them fell out and he couldn't find them, but I haven't had a chance to play with the thing and see exactly what's going on. I sort of figured it was a oneway bearing more like I'm used to seeing, but I don't know, like I said I haven't dug into it just yet. Too many other projects at the moment, and it's too cold to ride anyway!

I'm embarassed to say that, I'm about 20 mins south of Atlanta, but it's been darn cold down here (for GA anyhow). We've had highs in the 20's for the last week or so!
