Brother, please dont try to weld without experience. You may get hurt seriously. And for your gokart, you can use a single or inline twin cylinder motor and turbocharge it for perfomace. By doing this, you can get power at a cheaper price. Keep your ground clearance as flat to the ground as possible to maintain stability while drifting. You can use a manual engine. Just make an extra pedal for the clutch, or mount the clutch on the steering wheel along with the gear shifters using old school brake wire. You can make your own power steering from scrap hydraulic parts since you are a mechanical engineer like me. Be safe . Learn to weld from a professional.

50 mph is doable.
Manual Tranny is doable, but complicated and expensive.
Budget??????
$180 for engine
$500 for tranny
$250 kart
Is $1000 a light budget?

I would recommend welding yourself over trying to turbocharge a V-Twin for a go kart everyday of the week.
Motorcycle or ATV engine with Tranny already attached will be best bet!
You arent going to find that in North America.......and for that price...Engine : 8000 Rupees(fully reconditioned, turbocharged and tuned, with proper exhaust kit and a good air filter)
Looking to build something in the 50mph range
Light budget $$
Definitely manual tranny
Have zero knowledge on karting
Mechanically inclined no welding experience

All I'd need is an afternoon with some that would want to learn to weld and proper vision, and I could teach em to weld good enough at I'd trust it over a Chinese welded go kart. I've seen a few post telling people not to weld instead of pointing them to something like how to weld info. Check out welding tips and tricks on YouTube or his website. Jodie is pretty awesome and full of good info on how to weld.
Cool story Braa.....
Caught that too ehh.....
Brother Damian... your going to have to grow a thick skin around here....... now that you caught the eye of the Poboy.....
tranny...
Please when do people stop ...
keep in mind "I blew a tranny" means one thing in Detroit..
and a totally different thing in San Francisco!
Anywhooo
you definitely want a manual transmission..?
The ONLY way to achieve that is indeed a motorcycle engine.
(or ATV)
especially when your budget isn't 6ft tall
