Newbie question!

Hi everyone, i've been lurking for a while but finally signed up as i'll be starting collecting parts for my winter project of a fully home made kart.

I'm pretty much sorted and know how i plan to do things but there is one part that i'm not 100% sure on!

I'm confused with the rear axle, I want to run a live axle for example:

but could somebody please find (on UK ebay) if possible all of the other essential parts that would go with it (minus the brake disk and sprocket) and please explain to me how you stop the axle sliding side to side?!

Hi Jason,

My Son and I just finished our first live axle cart (although the gearing sucks, but that is another story). The inner race of the axle bearing has set screws that you tighten into the axle shaft to prevent side to side movement.

As for parts keep checking evil bay.

You could use locking collars as well

Edit: Here is a pic from Robotmickey's setup that I grabbed. There are locking collars on his axle there.

Thanks guys, think it makes a little more sense, i'll just have to buy the bits and i'm sure it'll then be obvious!

I am struggling sourcing the individual parts on ebay UK though but i'll just persist!

Search pillow block bearings or flange bearings on ebay for bearings. They should have set screws to stop the axle sliding.

What kinda kart are you building? Race kart I would reccomend #219 chain, fun kar with motor under 8hp and on reasonably good ground I would say #35 chain, anything else #41 or bigger.

That's exactly what i've been searching for! Thank you so much.

It's going to be a 125cc Manual kart on reasonable ground.

The only axles I can find on ebay are such as these:

are they suitable with only circlips to hold the wheels or is there something else i should do?

OK, actually if i were to use that axle for example would i then need hubs? I need fairly robust wheels so what hubs ok eBay UK would be suitable? All the hubs seem to be 3 bolt but the decent wheels tend to be 4 hole?
