Hello,

I'm new to go-karts and this site and need some expert assistance. I'm trying to repair an old kart for my sons. We replaced the engine with a new 6.5 Greyhound from Harbor Freight. The original engine was a 5.0. Before anyone asks, I'm sure the old engine could be salvaged by some one with much more skill/experience however....

We installed the new engine using the existing clutch from the 5.0. Now, when we run the kart the drive wheel will not stop spinning. I don't believe the RPMs are set too high on the new engine, as it seems to sound current at idle. The throttle cable/release doesn't seem to be the cause. So, I'm wondering if the old clutch is bad, perhaps stuck in an engage position.

So, how can I tell if the clutch is bad? Or, perhaps a different sized clutch is needed to accommodate the larger size engine?

Thanks!

Need a wee bit of clarification. Are you saying you're peeling rubber all over the place, or do you mean the wheel is spinning while the tire is off the ground? If it's off the ground, do NOT use that as an indicator of a problem. Quite often they will spin with no load. Put the kart on the ground and see what it does...
