I joined the site a couple days ago and am in need of help. My independent study group at school is building a go kart (more of a dune buggy) and we need help with it. We have a Predator 420cc Engine rated at 14 HP and we need to know what torque converter to get and how to install it. The back end of the kart where the engine will go has yet to be constructed and we don't know if we should add shocks or not. If anyone on here has a similar set-up on their kart then pictures and help would be greatly appreciated. I can only work on the kart every other week day so patience is key.

if you look on youtube at tmans go karts he does a video of mounding the engine with a solid axle and a swing arm that will give you a better look at what you are getting into. but id go with a 40 series tc because they are rated for that horsepower.

no offense rocketkart, but you're steering the guy in the wrong direction. comet 30 and clones of the comet 30 are really only good for up to 9hp. beyond that and you're gonna start burning up and stretching belts.

for 11-16hp motors absolutely only use a comet 40 or comet 40 clone or comparable torque converter.

i tried using a comet 30 on a bigger motor. biggest waste of money on new belts ever! lol.

a suggestion for how you build the kart: look at LOTS of pics of other karts. especially ones that work well, and aren't odd shaped. retail karts are a good place to start, like Yerf Dog, Manco, etc.

I totally agree. Please will nobody believe what is said in some of these adverts for knock off comet 30 series TC's. The genuine and knock off ones can only handle about 9HP

also, for the $550+ you're gonna spend on a 13hp motor and comet 40, you could quite easily find a 250cc or bigger donor parts motorcycle/quad that will give you way more horsepower and thrill factor. :)

Would anyone of you guys recommend using a jackshaft? I've seen some used on other karts but I just don't know what the advantages and disadvantages are for them.

advantages of a jackshaft. you can change out the gear ratios easy. disadvantages of a jackshaft. you got more moving parts and more that can go wrong and it all needs to line up dead on accurate.

A jackshaft is, primarily, used for gear reduction, whether it be to mount a TC driven unit or sprockets to achieve a lower gear than what is possible with only two sprockets. This is referred to as compound gearing...

They already have the engine, cant change the plans in mid course on a school project.....
A comet 40 series clutch drive/driven clutch will each cost you about a $100 bill.... plus a belt. With a 14 hp engine, you got lots of torque. Use a Comet 40 series TC and you guys will be happy....
The front suspension will be easy with what you got there. For the back, use our search button and look for "swingarm".....

this should work for you alltho its not at all recommended i run it and a DuroMax 16 HP engine on my off road kart. i have at the same balt on it for about a year now so it may or may not work for you but i don't see why not. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-GO-KART-T...ultDomain_0&hash=item35cf2878d6#ht_2385wt_880

Dang chinese knock off crap. I calll bull on the seller/ ad copy writer... From the ad:

"Bullet Lines 1" go kart clutch is an asymetrical inline small engine clutch that replaces Comet TAV2 30 - 100 Torq A Verters. This clutch will help you get more power of your small engine by reducing engine load with nearly a 10 - 1 overdirve. A torque converter acts similar to a transmission, allowing higher speeds of your small engine, and smoother acceleration.Small engine Torque Converter clutches are heavily used in riding lawnmowers, small tractors, go karts, mini bikes, and waterski winches."

"10-1 overDIRVE"? First, speak English. Spell check, people. Second- that's a 0.9:1 overdrive. Getcher crap straight. Third, a torque converter does not "act similar to a transmission". It IS a transmission. Peeve.

"This torque converter fits a 1" shaft and comes with your choice of a 10 tooth sprocket for a 40/41 chain or a 12 tooth sprocket for a 35 chain. It will work with small engines producing 8 HP - 13 HP"

Comet, the originator of this design, and a high-quality American manufacturer, rated this model to 8hp. Why on god's green earth am I going to believe that this knock-off is good to 13hp, reliably?

Sorry. That stuff makes me nuts...

Chris, you're mostly preaching to the choir on this; and it still totally sucks all the same. That's the #1 reason I try to do as little cash business on the internet as possible, and only with brick and mortar businesses...

My 1 purchase this year? Blank 2 point quick hitch links for my tractor. Agri Supply Corp.'s warehouse in NC had them....

I largely prefer brick-and-mortar shopping, too- but there's nothing wrong with online purchases. My peeve- and it's a BIG one- is misrepresentation. If I'm looking to buy a hunk of crap and the seller tells me it's a hunk of crap, fine. I know what it is going in. But if you bs me, sleep with one eye open, pal!

And I will tell you something else: Community counts. I have purchased many things from members of forums I belong to, including a couple of guys here. I have never been screwed over by a like-minded community member...
