Hello all, just picked up a manco american cruiser, with
a robin 5hp. so my question is, the shell part of the max torque
clutch is loose and wobbles back and forth (The part with the small gear). Is this repairable with
some bushing or is the clutch toast ? If it toast what
size in the crankshaft ? Thanks.

I believe most of those clutches already have a bushing/sleeve.

So it couldn't be hard to replace.

However could you take a few photos so we can see exactly whats wrong?

If your clutch is destroyed purchase a new one, as russ just said, oil it every 2 hours of use. Should you have trouble with this operating well just replace it, typically the prices of replacement parts on these small maxtorque clutches is much more than the price of a new clutch.

Thanks for the replys. I inspected it further and found the bushing worn out
completely, like only a little sliver left, and shell moves sideways about 1/2"
I think for the price I'll just buy a new clutch, since this one is most likley
the original one.
Thanks, David.

Hey all, so anyway just got around to pulling the clutch off
my newly aquired manco, and it was on there and good.
When it finally popped, the clutch exploded into pieces
on the ground

has anyone seen a jackshaft setup like this before ?
its looks to be mounted onto a plate on the engine ?

Is the chain from the jackshaft to the driven
sprocket adjustable ?

The best thing about those clutches are that they are totally rebuildable. The bronze bushing which you describe is less than $4. I have replaced one before. I have even had the inside of the drum turned on one that should have been a goner. Just hang on to that old clutch, you can always use it for parts.

All of the parts on your kart are Manco specific, yes, the chains are adjustable somewhat, you have a slotted jackshaft plate under your motor, and the motor itself is on slots, adjust one then the other. I've had to deal with several of these karts, and when the guards are fully in place, the drive is very very very annoying.

In case you didn't quite get what I'm saying about adjustment, pull the black jackshaft back towards you as much as possible while pushing the engine forward, this will tighten both chains and you can have a friend or family member tighten the engine back down while you do.
