I am thinking of wielding a trailer hitch to the middle part of my go kart. It will be reinforced. But the reason is I want to take it camping or when I work in the yard I would like to have a hitch mounted cargo rack to put things in and carry around.

can you weld gussets? if so, looks like adding a hookup. but you're gonna need to reinforce it.

My thinking is pretty much the same....the idea is good...but no way you can rely on just the hitch for support....(think hitch....and two hooks on either side)

the frame section at the rear bumper area/engine guard, shouldn't be to hard to weld in a plate between the two vertical frame tubes then along the bottom edge of horizontal tube running across rear, or bolt it in depending on wall thickness of tube on frame and receiver tube I'd leave flush with rear so its not sticking out and drill the pin whole towards the front.

I think after you do it you may spend a lot of time looking at the sky. :censored:: Remember there is no weight on the front wheels. Good luck whatever you decide.

:iagree: I agree, but didn't want to be the first negative Nancy. (I think I'm too new to be that guy.)

Tongue weight will be the biggest issue I can think of. Can you mount the hitch far enough forward that the ball (fulcrum) is between the axles? This would shift weight to the front axle and that would allow you to steer, it would also help keep the front on the ground during acceleration, BUT it would also unload the rear axle during braking (resulting in jack knifing behavior). Depending on how far forward, and low, you are able to get the hitch it could also make driving uphill an adventure.

I made a dedicated trailer tug from an old rototiller years ago.

I do not have pics (this was before digital pics) but basically I removed the tines and made a hitch ball mount out of 2" by 3/8" steel strap bent into an inverted V, with the ball at the top.

The rototiller had forward and reverse, and was simply a belt clutch. Geared super low, it could pull my 22' HiLo trailer out of the mud behind the house with ease.

don't think he wants to pull trailer, just wants a cargo rack, or small platform think it would be fine depending on how much weight he wants to carry? as long as he doesn't come close to exceeding his weight it should be ok and counter balance, but loading that much and getting on it will be a different story then he'd have to learn to board it like a space shuttle:lolgoku: and don't mount it behind head rest farther up you go the more leverage you put on it to do a wheelie. if weight is a concern you could always put a caster wheel off the rear of it, as long as you intend to keep the speed down, or make on on front above to foot area but below your eye level, and one on rear.

It would be better to have a rack that you can strap the kart to.

http://www.harborfreight.com/300-lb-capacity-atv-cargo-carrier-69858.html

I have this. My Invader street kart can strap onto this. I have never used it though, as I could fit the kart into my SUV that I had.

A little bit of modding/ingenuity would make it a perfect carrier.
Uhhhh, he wants a carrier FOR his kart, not to put his kart in one..... The carrier you linked to would make his go kart too unbalanced, as previously stated, and cause the front end to be off the ground the majority of the time....
Op, put a small rack on the front of your kart. Then add a slightly larger one , to the top of the kart. Look at the biggest thing you would ever consider carrying on/with the kart..... That's really where you need to start. What would/will you be carrying?
Camping? Fishing poles, ice chest, tackle box, bait.... ? Tent? Once you figure out the largest, not necessarily heaviest, thing you strap on, you can decide where and how you can/will carry it.... This is one of those times where you really need to plan ahead, so its not too small/big....
Just my 2cents....
EDIT
Just saw your kart..... Forget building a rack to carry stuff. Add the hitch, and build a small trailer to pull behind it. Center the trailers weight, just ahead of the axle. The trailers axle should hold all but 15-20℅ of its load. The rest is tongue weight, keeping the trailer from just flopping off the ball. Your kart has enough oomph to pull a small trailer, and its less wear on the actual kart.
And most likely, and importantly, the safest way to go....

Look for some aspen saplings....(maybe 3" diameter) ....and make a one of those travoy Indian deals that they used to make before wheels were invented....so you can drag stuff around.....

Yes....I'm being a smartaleckly jerk...but really...a trailer does make the most sense.....

In this case....kinda a cool....(out of the box)....idea...but...probably not really a good one for the above mentioned downsides.....

Still....not a completely non-feasible idea....but...does have it's problems....
