It was easy to tell that that auxiliary mount plate was flimsy.

I didn't take note that there was an extra layer to it. Gheez. Previous owners, huh? Nearly every single one of them is a Bubba. :D

I'm not sold on the steering column key start. That looks janky.

Be a real man and use the recoil starter!

EDIT: You've got some confusing pics. First with the go kart steering wheel, then with an automobile style, then another kart style with chrome spokes.

Looks good...
For ease of access, You could use a smaller washer for the clutch...
With that size must be a pain to oil the clutch, as it needs it every 2 hrs use....

Clutch bolt and washer

Ok, thanks. I think with the plates & the engine flex, the previous owner added that big washer to help keep the chain on, as it would come off rounding corners, before removing the plates. I don't remember my old kart having any bolt or washer in the end of the shaft. The clutch has 2 set screws, don't they hold it on?
When I put on new 6 inch tires, they would touch the bolt while riding, so I removed the bolt & washer. Yeah, I havn't been oiling that as I should.

Yes, you need a bolt and washer on the end of the PTO. It keeps the clutch assembly from sliding off.

The keyway (in the shaft) and key keeps the inner part of the clutch indexed to the shaft so they will turn as one, once the shoes engage the clutch 'bell'.

I suppose you could get by without a bolt and washer for a few laps...

Added lights

Since I bought this kart with a starter & battery setup, I didn't think a lot about removing them. Instead I thought about riding mowers with starters having lights. So I added a light kit and installed the switch in my janky column key start.

Throttle linkage

When I got my kart I installed a new throttle cable. I put on a new bicycle cable I had. The cable would come loose at clamp by the throttle. I would tighten it up but eventually would happen again. I took out the screw and found the threads stripped. I also didn't have the correct end on the cable to connect to the throttle linkage. I used more bike parts, wire stops, L brackets, springs, screws and nuts to make throttle linkage tight and responsive.

Brake rod support

I noticed the brake rod was touching the drum of the band brake. The first thing I did was hold it up with some copper wire. This was ugly and would collect grass in it. Then I replaced it with a windows lock that would lock on the engine plate. If it was adjusted just right it would keep the band clear of the drum all the way around it. It would slip after riding so I drilled a hole on the plate and mounted a bracket to hold the brake rod in place with no drag on the band.
