Pick up a YK43B controller. Best cheap brushed Chinese controller you can get. And it can take a beating. Sometimes you see them new on ebay for 30-40$ And they have been tested up to 190amps. Also extremely easy to wire.

Update: sprockets and controller

I tried to hook up the old chain that came with the kart but the roller width is a teensy bit too much. I've ordered some #41 chain (clearance from Princess Auto) which should do the trick. Then I can load test by putting the cart on blocks, clamping it down, and using the brake.
