New to karting

Afternoon,
I am goking to build a kart for my clones and putting a parts list together now. I have noticed some talk about the several of the engines like the DuroMax XP18HPE and the Predator 212. The cart will be used by the family (me @195, my 14yo @155, and 2 littles @ 50-60 lbs). Use will be mix on and off road. Tire change will be done for use. I can't leave anything stock for long for SA. I'm pretty good with a welder hence me fabbing the kart. I'm open to suggestions and questions. Pic of the design is attached.

18 hp might be a bit much, what does the plans for the kart call for? How much does it weight? A 212 will carry any of you around just fine...but how big and heavy is your machine...that is the question!

I would also say 18hp is a bit much. A 212 with some performance parts should be fine

I bought the plans. I may just do a build blog and see how it goes. I have 4 sons that I'm aware of. Not sure on the weight to be honest. It's 80' of 1x1.25 14 gauge for most of it.

A quick glance at HD website, 72" weighs 32 lbs. 80 feet is over 400 lbs for the frame alone. And that's 16ga. You sure about that 80' number?

well according to my ryerson/alro books 1-1/2 x 1 x .083 is 1.317 lb per foot (no mention of 1-1/4 x 1) so less than 106 lbs

I am basing the 80' on the build sheet, but 40' is 1x1 box. so not a big change in weight. Ill also have a some 16g sheet for flooring and shielding without modifications.

hands down, predator 212 will give you the best bang for your buck. change my mind.

What are the thoughts on the 212cc Tillotson Hemi Engine with upgrades down the road?

Well the benefit of a Tillotson was you can get it with electric start, something the 212 Predator doesn't offer. Supposedly the flywheel on the Tillotson is rated for 10,000 RPM (at least on the non-electric start far as I'm aware). Cams and the like should be mostly interchangeable. The 212 Predator seems to be the most bang for the buck. Unless electric start is a must have.

AFAIK you would have to use 2. Trying to have a seperate throttle just for the one engine that has the reverse will be a pain.
