Hey all,

I picked up an older Streaker go kart for cheap last week. The frame was rusted and I have since primered it and I got the engine running. But I also want to replace the engine with something more powerful.

^^ so there she is. It needs some work, I would like to add a roll cage and some larger rear tires. But first I would like to get it working.

I would like to do this engine:
http://www.amazon.com/DuroMax-Shaft...180612&sr=8-5&keywords=duromax+electric+start

But a few questions, will my current TQ converter work with that engine. I currently have a pretty beat up Briggs and Stratton 5 HP engine. (It needs some work) While it runs, its rough so I am all in for changing out the engine.

Thanks!

Welcome.

No, your TC will not work with 16HP. Never ever.....You are going to have to get a Comet 40 series TC (or equivalant), and that could set you back about $300.

If it were me, I would get the Predator 6.5HP, and get another air filter and exhaust. That will boost your power a bit. What is your gearing like now? Count the TC sprocket teeth as well as the axle sprocket teeth. Also give us the tyre diameter

Thanks for the quick reply! I will have to get a count tonight when I get home from work. What about the 7 hp version of that motor?

The other big question is the drive shaft @ 3/4'' will it fit my TQ converter.

I am not looking for anything extreme, I have a 4 yr old and plan to ride with him on some trails ect... I just figured might as well go 16hp for the future!

Thanks

Yes that 7hp engine will work with your tc. That briggs is a good engine, I'd spend a little time and money on it first..... It has the ability to put out 7hp too.....

The engine was pretty neglected. I am not not opposed to putting a new one on it. As long as it is direct fit. But if you can share info on performance mods for my engine...I am always up for that too.
So three more questions:
1.) when running the clutch belt has some serious rubber coming off it? Time to replace??
2.) rear tires could use a replacing, is it possible to put on taller wider tires. Similar to the picture below. But I dont want it to ride slanted. Do I need to move the axle?

3.) Where can I get a roll cage like that^^ I have looked all over by model number and I can't find crap!

Thanks again for the help!!

1) I would first do some maintenance on the TC. Look at THIS thread for info regarding that. Post a pic or two of the TC, so that we can see if there are any visible problems. You might have the wrong belt even. Have a look at THIS link regarding TC belts.
2)You can put on taller tyres, but this would affect your gearing depending on how much larger you go. Once we know what your gearing is, we will be able to give you some more advice on tyre size.
3)I am not too sure about the roll cage, but if you do find one, then you will definately need seat belts. If you don't find one, then you have to do without the seat belts. This is because you would like to be thrown free in an open kart if you have an accident. You don't want to be pinned under it. If you have a cage, you need to be kept inside so that the cage doesn't squash you

I tried to count the teeth on the gear...not trying to be lazy but is there an easier way to count when there is a chain on it?

I broke the throttle cable last night, so I have some work to do.

Count the gaps between the pins...

Here's another tip: Use a sharpie to mark every tenth tooth; that way, if you lose count, you don't have to start over...
