Hi all, I'm new to go karts and I was looking for some advice on my first build. The chassis is a used dog 3209 two seater which had a howitt 150. After a few times of driving it around the property, the engine out of nowhere violently seized, oil level was good and there was no preexisting issues. Fast forward to today, I have a predator 212 and a torque converter in it. My question is, can regular home depot 1/4 x 1/4 square stock be used as a key or does it need to be a specific hardness (ie tool steel) and if I use regular square stock can it be detrimental to the axle or anything else, thank you

Thank you, what about axle locks, I have locking pillow block bearings but I just bought axle locks to install a total of four on the axle. Is it better to drill a hole in the axle for the set screws or are they fine by themselves, I am going to be using this primarily in the woods

I work as a plant maintenance lead tech. and we only drill a small hole (dimple) in a shaft for the set screw when we have pulleys slipping or spinning on high speed shafts, otherwise it should be fine just tightening it but that's up to you if you want it (piece of mind). You may want to add some thread lock (blue Loctite) to the set screw threads to help keep it from backing out. Do not use red loctite because it will have to be heated to get it off. Blue Loctite does not need to be heated to release it. And on your key stock if you have not done this, wipe some anti-seize compound on it to keep it from rusting to the axle. Apply it where the rims/bearings slide on the axle so the rims won't rust to the axle hubs. Do not apply it on any type of brake pads or rotors. Hope this helps out.

I do the same with pulleys. I wouldn't do it on stops because it's unnecessary. Another reason is if for some reason you want to slightly adjust its position, you have to rotate the clocking of the set-screws and redrill.
