I've been watching the local ads and Craigslist for things go-kart, and today I scored all this for $200.


Yerf-Dog with full suspension, tie-rod steering, Comet CVT, drum brake, minus engine. From what I can tell everything is in decent shape except the RF bottom spring mount (the adjustable aluminum ring that the spring sits on) is broken.

The Comet CVT is disassembled, but I think everything is there and in decent shape - except the belt.

Subaru Robin EX17 (5-6hp?) engine with broken pull-start rope, missing carburetor & spacer/manifold. Oil looks good, isn't locked up.

Tecumseh OHH60 (6hp?) engine with missing recoil starter assembly, carburetor. Oil looks decent, isn't locked up.

Initial questions:

Anybody know were I can find one of these spring mounts that isn't broken?




* Are all Comet belts the same size (3/4" wide and same diameter)? I'm assuming its a 30 series asymmetric type, since the flat pulley sides are on the same side of the belt.

* If I use the Robin engine (cast-iron bore, two bearings, better reputation), what's a good (cheap) carb to put on it? Those $30 ebay ones work ok?

* I've got a running Briggs 5hp flathead, wouldn't that work on this kart? Then again, I'm in the middle of rebuilding a Briggs 8hp for the other (suspensionless) kart, maybe I need to rethink which kart gets which engine...

What's the value of a carb-less Tecumseh? Prolly the only reason I'd use it is to pull the governor and see how fast I can go before the rod lets go, unless somebody here wants it.

I would just sell the junk motors for $50 on craigslist. Then i'd go with a big block clone and a CVT setup for that. Especially if you really are planning on being offroad with this thing and not just on a flat gravel driveway. A 6hp motor even with a CVT just isnt enough for these things.

I had one of those karts with a 16hp clone and a racing drum clutch on it... geared 6:1 and it didnt have a ton of takeoff but it moved overall. Solid amount of power in reserve and i didnt have a long stretch to really run it.
