I purchased a Murray hard drive go kart last night Model # GT60401X92. It runs and drives, has the original 6.0hp tecumsin power sport engine. Need a little TLC, cables,brakes, rim. Nothing major. Any pointers, I did drive it and right away thought.. this needs a Torque Convertor set up. WHat do you all think. It now has a centrifical clutch and 2 chains.

SO started the tear down. found many welds that have to be cleaned and redone. I did explore the drive system. It has the Max-Torque centrifugal clutch, the gearing is as follows. Clutch is 10T to jackshaft 26T, jackshaft-10T, to axle gear 36T, 16" tires. So in your alls professional opinion, with this gear set-up is it worth keeping. I was thinking of maybe swapping out for the GTC torque Convertor system. I need to keep this torque strong, allot of banks and hills to climb, but would like to have a "fast" Kart too.
One thing I did notice about this Kart, the tubing is much larger and thicker than the Yerf--dog.

So the damage to date is.. 4 broken welds on the rear swing arm( will cut out old tubing and install new) slightly bent axle, and a REALLY bent rim. Not too bad for this Kart. With the exception of the bent rim, I should be able to repair the rest. Will probably replace both rear rims and convert over to a 4 bolt hub and rim.

That brings the final ratio to 9.36:1 which is pretty much where you want it...
I'm not saying don't do it but, keep in mind, you'll still need low gearing so, you'll likely end up running from the CVT to the jackshaft...
I guess, by the time they designed them, the engineers worked out that bigger is better
Thanks for the input. I spent better part of the afternoon cutting out the old broken tubing from the rear swing arm( 4 major breaks). grinding and cleaning up the frame and engine mount. A freind is going to weld in new tubing and once thats done, I'll reinstalled everything and see how it all works. Still need to find a rim, thought of converting over to a 4 lug hub/rim set-up.

Question for the experts.. I am considering replacing the tecumsin engine with a Preditor 212. I am running this engine on my yerf-dog and it works great. Plus there are a load of performance upgrades for it too. I haven't found many for the Tecumsin engine. Just a thought. The Tecumsin runs, but has carb issues, for $100 I can get a new engine... Open for your opinions/insite.

Tecumseh went out of business some years ago, making it difficult to source parts &, so I've heard, their carbs can be a bit temperamental but, not impossible to deal with.
I'm also a strong believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", likewise, if it is broke, fix it!
Think about it this way: If your car was running a bit rough, would you take it to a mechanic for a tune up or to replace the engine with a chinese copy?
A bit of carb cleaning goes a long way...

I'll try to clean the carb. I took the bowl off and cleaned it out, wasn't very much in the bowl. Bought some carb cleaner, will pull the carb and giveit a good cleaning, not to much to those carbs, but its worth a try. Sorry, but I have to say the Preditor engine line is very impressive(I'm NOT a fan of China made products either), just want to have a reliable running kart. I should have the frame back by this week-end, then I'll put it all together and see how it all works.

The majority of us are fans of the Predator engine. I absolutely HATE tech-crapsa motors. They work fine at first. Then start flooding,puking up oil from carb, ohv's snap or keepers fall off..... the carbs are crap. Mostly, i think i just hate the carbs..... I personally never had any real motor problems,just the carbs. Ill buy a used predator over a new tech any day....

BUT, as Fabroman stated, dont buy a new motor cause present one needs some TLC.... Try cleanin carb and the like. Give it all a once-over....IF it just wont run or not to your liking, buy the Predator. ....

I'll clean the carb, I think I found one for $40. On line, new. we'll see. If cleaning it doesn't fix it then I think I will get the Preditor and put a Stage 1 kit with an aluminum flywheel(govener deleted). We'll see how the $$ goes, I just might drop a stock unit on it for now..... Always looking for more POWER!! Just have to have a deep enough pocket book!
Just have to have a deep enough pocket book!Well its done! I played with the tecumsin, could not get it to run like I wanted, soo, now a new P-212 sets in its place. I reused all the original drive components. Not too bad of a kart, will have the daughter on it tonight to take it out for its first run. Swing arm came out great, but found the rear section of the cart was tweeked, so we fix that too. striaghtened the axle, reused both rims. So damage wise, cart & gas to get it $325, engine, 120 (w/warrenty), throttle cable.. FREEBEE,couple of late nights.. One VERY happy little girl... PRICELESS!

The Predator engines are pretty great though. I have a 212 on our mini bike, and I love it. My only complaint with this engine.... it's chinese. I don't mean it's of poor quality, only that I'd rather invest in the economy of the country I live in. I may go with a Briggs engine next time. *shrug*
