My kart I just got with a Tecumseh 5.0 hp motor runs but it's a pain to start and it will not stay idling. When it starts I have to keep pumping the gas or hold the gas for it to stay running. I changed the spark plug and cleaned the carb.... I'm stuck on what to do next :/

I have a 5 horse tec as well and i had the exact same problem it was a pain to start and it wouldn't stay on a idle only thing i could figure was that tecs are more industrial motors and are designed for pressure washers and other stuff so they are start on full throttle and keep running at that speed and are not designed to idle. I got mine running on a very high idle but wasn't really satisfied with it so i boxed the engine up and bought a predator from harbor freight.

Between the carburetor and the engine. Excessively high idle indicates an excessively lean mixture, which can be caused by bad intake gasket(s).

Not true at all. Industrial engines still have idle jets. They most certainly are designed to be run at idle.

Can't remember off the top of my head but fill it to were you can see a little bit on the bottom of the threads that you are filling it from, as far as oil goes synthetic is the best to use although, if the engine is brand new which it doesn't sound like it is, you break it in with some 15-60d i think off the top of my head thats what i used but i don't know i'm horrible with numbers. Synthetic leaves next no wear on your engine though, just make sure when your putting in synthetic oil you have all of your old oil out of the engine because you shouldn't mix regular and synthetic. I'm trying mmy best to explain this since your new to all this.
Do you know were the oil drain studs are?

I would clean your carb again, and make sure all the jets are clean (poke them out with a bread twist tie), replace spark plug, change oit, check air filter, and most importantly, check the gasket devino spoke about.

What you can do to see if your gasket is faulty and letting air in, is to start the engine, and then spray come starter spray around the gasket area. If the engine surges a bit, it means the spray is being sucked in, and your gasket is shot

I changed my spark plug and my air filter is filthy but I checked autozone and Walmart but I can't find one :/ and with the oil I still don't really know what kind to use and how much :/ and is there an oil filter? While cleaning the carb how do I keep from gas going everywhere?

Have you tried adjusting the idle?

My friend said he adjusted it but idk. How do I do that and how much should I adjust it in which way?

That would have been the first thing you should have tried if you have a idle problem :roflol:

You have a bigger problem now because your needle and seat have more than likely shifted/fallen out. You are going to have to sort that out forst before you try the idle again.

To adjust the idle, screw it all the way in until it LIGHTLY seats itself. Then turn 1 1/2 turns out. This is a good place to start from. Run engine and adjust further if needed.

There should be a fuel shut off under the tank somewhere to stop the fuel draining out. If not, you are just going to have to let the fuel drain into a container until the tank is dry
