My new hemi predator 212 all of a sudden won't start. Gas and oil are perfect and it ran great until I took off the airbox briefly to try it without the cover. Now it's back on and the engine hardly starts and does not idle. What could have possibly been changed by briefly taking the airbox off??

The nuts that hold the airbox on hold the whole carb and insulator/gaskets too. Is it possible that the intake isn't sealed up properly and has a leak now? Maybe the airbox isn't sitting exactly how it is supposed to.

Or maybe there is some debris clogging a passage in the carb?

The engine is brand new I shouldn't have to clean the carb already

In theory.

How often does "it's brand new so I shouldn't have to..." actually apply to ANYTHING from harbor freight though?

When you say you took the air box off, do you mean the entire intake, or just the air filter cover?

Start with a carb cleaning, and checking the seal between the carb and the engine. These things aren't built in a clean room by NASA technicians, they're pounded out in a dirty factory by hourly laborers (who are likely undperpaid and underage). There could be a tiny chip of metal left over from machining lodged in a carb passage, or some random gunk or whatever. How long has that gas been sitting in the can in your shed?
Check the governor linkages too to make sure nothing got bent or is binding up.

Yup, sure as Shinola.... A brand new dirty carb has beaten a number here... but a tiny fleck of crap is all it takes....

Some times it is as easy as pulling the bowl off and cleaning the main jet. Easy easy and worth the 5 minutes. It used to happen to my daughter s kart so often I taught here to do it herself. Taking you air box off could have gotten a bit of junk in there.
