new karter needing help

my name is zack im 22 from north carolina, my brother has got a go kart for his birthday, i had karts when i was younger but never one like this, so far ive determined it is a ty rail 2 seater, the axle sprocket is very loose but im hung up taking it apart because ive never worked on a axle set up like this, any help or pointers on how this axle comes apart would be greatly appreciated

Do you mean the sprocket is loose on the carrier or the whole thing is loose on the axle
Is it a live axel or is the sprocket on one of the wheels?

If its a live axle then you should just be able to tighten up the bolts holding the carrier or the sprocket on, and shouldn't need to take the axel appart

Make sure you ramoved the bolts form the flangettes and the set screws for the bearings (if it is a live axle of course)

I agree 100%. Make sure that you have all the set screws screwed down. Look to see if you have a key or if it is missing.

Its a live axle, the guy we got it from was holding the key in with a band clamp, the carrier is fine as far as I can tell but with it on the axle I can't tell if the key was the only problem or not, the carrier bolts are tight, there were no set screws in anything so far and the only thing I haven't removed is the flangette? From the center of the set up, gna try and get pics up later today

Let's get a little more specific here. Does the sprocket move from side to side on the axle, or does it spin without driving the axle?

I've removed the key, so it can spin free of the axle and also side to side, but b4 I removed the key it would also move at an angle to the axle, like / \, the slashes represent looking at the sprocket from the rear with the axle level

It sounds like the sprocket carrier is too big for your axle. Make sure you have the right size.

There should be 2 or 3 bolts on each side where the axle attaches to the frame. Remove them, remove the chain & the whole axle should fall out
