"New" kart!!!

Hello I'm still new to the kart community. I don't know what kind of kart I have. But I need suggestions on getting it running. I also have a predator 6.5hp. To put on it.

I found out it's a Bristers thunderkart. But I haven't found any schematics or real info on the kart besides that.

It looks to me, like a pulley on the engine connects a belt to the input side of transmission and uses tensioner pulley clutch????

The Gearbox, I'd like to know more about it. Something like a snowmobile trans???

No transmission. I was wondering about that. First time seeing a belt driven with chain in the opposing side. But again im new to this.

Looks like the torque conveter has seen better days. A new set up will run 75$ to a hondo. Frame looks solid though!

It looks like the TC driver bought it somewhere along the line; the idler pulley and it's mount and linkage appears to be a ghetto hack add on to try and simulate it. The linkage appears to be just a slipper type clutch like an old lawnmower.

Not really, Pat actually explained it pretty well....BUT...I'll give it a shot at making it clearer :

The belt system does indeed appear to be a homemade rigged up thing....not totally bad....but almost the worst setup possible....

A torque converter could replace that crap, do the same thing....and give you another rpm operational band....(like an overdrive transmission on a car)....

Think of a Torque Converter as a transmission. It is a belt drive systems that adjusts the speed by rpms and friction. Basked on the size of the kart and the predator 212cc engine, I think its the best way to go.
Here is a pic of how it would configure to your kart.

The driver pulley mounts to the engine shaft and the driven mounts to the jack shaft which is the shaft that runs under the engine mount plate and to the chain sprocket.

I recommend buying the Driver and Driven pulleys in a set then measuring for a belt. It looks like your configuration is a little different and might not work with a kit belt. Not a problem because there is a wide variety of belts for go karts.

Yeah, the driven he has appears to have been hacked as well. At the very least, its so crudded up that I wouldn't trust it, period.

Do you guys NOT see the rod that pulls the (non TC pulley) to put tension on it to make it work? Granted, the spacing looks close enough to have been a TC at one time.....but it's an idler set up (just like the OP said) !!!!

C'MON MAN! !!! We're better than this!

In case you're wondering now....there is a 3rd pulley missing....RIGHT???? Otherwise, how do you turn a pulley at all?

I see three pullies if you count the monstrosity the previous owner used to wedge the two halves of the driven assembly together when they pulled the spring, etc. off (its the one with the large thumb screw sticking out of one of the grooves).

I'm guessing that you are referring to the one for the motor? Which is also missing? As far as the linkage, they copied an old lawn tractor, which is why I described it as such.

Yeah...Pat...that is what I was referring to....(A torque converter connects to the engine...which isn't there....) sooooo.....this is a hacked up piece of crap! I find it hard to believe it WAS EVER a TC.... and for good and all.....CERTAINLY ISN'T ONE NOW!!!! That's my point! ....and it wasn't even directed at you....What frigging post are you reading that you quoted (from me) that's contradictory? ??? I SAID YOU got it right. What more do you want? Jeeze... check with doc about dropping the pain med dosage!

So we grinded of the ****** weld job someone did on the front pulley that drives the chain. So far everything is still intact. Now the pulley is loose so I should have it of by tomorrow. This is the engine I bought/traded.

Series 40 is for engines 8hp and up. Series 20 is the same as a 30, but it comes with a backplate (IIRK). You will probably need the 30, so that you can set the driver and driven up, and then get the belt required for that center to center distance between the two

If you can switch the sprocket on the axle to the driver side, you can buy a Torque converter with a backplate (jackshaft included) and cut away all that stuff.
