Done! I got the seat on, and the pipe...it's loud and sounds kinda harley davidson-ish....not my kinda thing...anyways, is there any way I can modify the tone a little bit?

I'm pretty happy the way it turned out though...not bad for a first timer!

Higher tone or lower tone? If you want lower (deeper) tone then get a 3/4" to 1 or 2" pipe adapter and add a about 3 inches of the larger pipe to the end, and vise versa for a higher tone.

Not sure if you did already but take the top end off the motor and scrape all the crap out of it, off the piston out of the cylinder, off the valves, etc. with a wire brush. Get a new plug. Remove the head gasket.

I'll try that, (isn't that also known as port and polishing?) I already got a brandy-new plug, modded the exhaust of course, new grips, seat, and more modifications to come :)

I was wondering, is it a good idea to strap on a cold-air intake?

Thanks!

Porting is oly done on a two stroke, but I guess thats what polishing is. I belive porting would be either cleaning out the exhaust/intake ports or making them bigger. I'm not much of a 2 stroke guy.

Can't help you with a cold air intake.

I think I might do a straight pipe on my Briggs 5 HP flathead, it's going in my Kart and I want to get a lot of power out of it.

What do you mean by a cold-air intake? It's gona be sucking cold air as it is now. Do you mean a pod filter?

Porting (on a 4 stroke) is a process of altering the ports to make them flow better, that can be either adding or removing material in the ports. Polishing is pretty self explanatory, usually only done to the exhaust port as it reduces turbulence in the inlet port.

Porting on a 2 stroke is basically the same thing but you really need to know what your doing to do it properly.

Thanks

Yes, yes a pod filter, that's what I meant...

by cold air intake, I meant this...(with the pipe and everything...)

http://www.hpautoworks.com/images/aemCold-Air-Intake-copy.gif

Iv'e seen some mini-bikes with one of those on, I just thought I could get some decent added power out of one of those...

Could I apply any of these modifications to my engine?

Timing Key - Increases your engines timing by 10 degrees, cheap and VERY effective part, But please note this increases performance on some engines, but can also decrease performance in others, it depends what your timing is set at in the factory. (RRP $20)

Fibreglass Reeds - Replace your stock metal reed with a high performance Fibreglass one. Fibreglass reeds allow more and faster fuel into the carb, this resulting in a faster burning of fuel, which increases low, mid and top end power. (RRP $20-$30)

Performance Air Filter and V Stack - If your bike came with a black air cleaner instead of an air filter, its loosing potential power, by adding a high performance air filter and vstack your allowing more and faster air into your engine, which will increase performance and engine life. (RRP $30-$40)

Hi Flow Fuel Filter - This is not a performance mod but it is one of the most important things that should be considered when buying modifications, If your fuel line does not have a fuel filter, there is a very good chance that dirt or foreign objects have got inside your fuel and are now blocking your carb. By installing this cheap modification it protects your engine from harm by dirt, plastic, etc. It is a must for every bike . (RRP $7-$15)

I see, most people just mount the filter strait onto the carby, no real need for the pipe. But yes, a higher flowing air filter will increase power.

As they say, it can work, only really useful if your reving your engine much higher than standard (and your not). You can make your own(quite dodgy but hay) by simply filing your key a little bit. I wouldn't recommend using one on your engine as it doesn't rev very high and 10 degrees is quite an advancement and may cause a knock in your engine.

Fibreglass Reeds - Replace your stock metal reed with a high performance Fibreglass one. Fibreglass reeds allow more and faster fuel into the carb, this resulting in a faster burning of fuel, which increases low, mid and top end power. (RRP $20-$30)

Not applicable to your engine, for 2 strokes only.

Performance Air Filter and V Stack - If your bike came with a black air cleaner instead of an air filter, its loosing potential power, by adding a high performance air filter and vstack your allowing more and faster air into your engine, which will increase performance and engine life. Most people use a performance breather filter (meant for automotive engines) for a high flow air filter on small engines like yours (they are basically a very small pod filter, go to your local auto store and ask for one, it should be less then $10) you could use a performance filter for a motorbike or car if you want, they will flow better but cost more, many people swear by the unifilters brand of air filter, never tried them though. What conditions do you ride in? Dusty? Muddy? Sandy?

Hi Flow Fuel Filter - This is not a performance mod but it is one of the most important things that should be considered when buying modifications, If your fuel line does not have a fuel filter, there is a very good chance that dirt or foreign objects have got inside your fuel and are now blocking your carb. Not applicable to your engine unless you get a different carby, Briggs carbies have the carb mounted on the tank and use no float bowl. There is no way of putting an after maket fuel filter on a Briggs fuel system.

After all these mods you may need to re-jet your carby, but if your serious about getting more power out of this thing then a better idea is to get a better carby, something off a 4 stroke motorbike around 125cc I guess. In my opinion the standard Briggs carby is pretty pathetic performance wise.

Other mods you could do include mild porting and "shaving the eyebrows" but the engine will need to be completely dis-assembled to do those.

What is you budget for modifying this thing?

If you can afford one then a torque converter would improve performance considerably.

Thanks

Hayden

I ride in normal conditions, warm, but not humid, and dust free maybe 60-75% of the time...I'm gonna try the small pod filter and I'll ask around for some decent ones...thanks for all the info! As of now I'm not sure what my budget is, I'm just doing it one little mod at a time...
