Easy fix for sure.
Just clean the carb.
Even easier... When I have that issue I just pull the float bowl, clean the main jet reassemble and good to go!

a BSP engine or a BSP sticker??
that's the question

A out of the BOX all STOCK engine is still a 6.5hp engine,
no governor no tuning parts.
only improvements: intake and exhaust.
is it able to deliver 9horses?
I highly doubt it especially since all of them are cheap chinese clones
and if it's not a gx240 clone 9 w/o mods is not going to happen I'd say.

Outlaw engine?
(rod, flywheel valve springs etc..) 9 hp from a gx200 clone? easily!

you being able to tell those two apart: NO WAY!
neither of us could without cracking open the crankcase and removing the headcover.

Kart looks nice though,
it's a straight chassis racing kart, no offset crab (yeah, on purpose!)
and if it's not cracked or bent, with attachments (wheels seat axles etc.)
it might be worth your 300 dollar toolbox trade even if the engine is just a BSP engine.
w/o anything done to it.

pesonally a cracked or bent frame though is not worth a dollar if you do not know what you are up to.
So, chassis broken -> take your toolbox and run.

Timingdoyle, I'm fairly certain your kart was made by a company called Bug K&P Manufacturing.

Most all of the various Bug Kart models built from the mid-70's on up had a fairly unique looking front of frame/front bumper designs that sorta resembled various Insects. I wasn't able to find any pics exactly like your frame online, but I can say with confidence that if your kart wasn't made by Bug, whoever built it was totally copying the Bug look.

Bug Karts closed down a few years ago but you'll find lots of Bug Kart info/pics searching online.

If you wanna make a positive I.D. on it, you should post another thread like this at this vintage kart forum: http://www.vintagekarts.com/forum/view_forum.php?id=1

PS: But I'd suggest you remove that engine and motor mount first, and then take more pics of the kart to post there. Most of the vintage kart experts on that forum are strictly into 2-cycle engines and won't bother to help anyone out that posts a kart pic with a 4-cycle.

I can't figure out how to post links on this new phone, but if you'll search battle of the clones part 2 there are some interesting dyno results. With just an air filter, jetting and open exhaust they all make over 9hp with the best of them making 10.5. The BSP isn't tested as these are bone stock unopened engines. So I wouldn't doubt 9hp for a second.

hmm... haven't seen that;
I was extrapolating from the crappy torque curve a stock engine has
(as shown in honda or even predator diagrams)

I know in theory (if it'd hold the torque it has at 3600 rpms) 10.7 is the max for 5.5k rpms or something with similar engines,
but the torque curve does not look promising at all ...

But okay, if the guys tested that and get reproducable results well over 9hp with nothing but filter, jets and exhaust;
I stand corrected.

Still.. a BSP engine is not worth a fortune
(it's a stock engine with as you said: filter, jet and exhaust)
A modded engine (with significantly stronger parts)
will endure more abuse and has a longer lifecycle, thus would be worth a bit more.

Anyways, if it's indeed a Bug, it's certainly well worth trading a toolbox IMHO ;)
(again, as long as the chassis is not cracked of course)

Check the valve adjustment, there's an automatic compression release on the cam that don't work if the lash is too loose. I set mine as close to zero lash as possible.
I can already see a good clutch and quality chain, so chances are good that someone cared for that kart.
