i just bought 2 go karts for 150 bucks. one has a tec 6.5hp. the guy said it runs, but it had water in the gas.

any tips on getting it running?

i drained the tank, took the carb off and cleaned it.

also, the clutch and chain was really rusty, so i put it in a bucket of paint thinner to loosen things up. it's been sitting there for 12 or 13 hours now.

what else do i do to the engine/clutch? thanks

have you turned the engine through? check the oil first. if the engine turns through, either stick your hand over the carb and exhaust alternately, or remove the rocker/valve cover and make sure your valves aren't stuck. carb side should suck, exhaust blow. does your fuel tank have a filter? and if it is plastic keep it full of gas, mine condensates like you wouldn't believe. the filters in most tanks like to hold water, make sure it is empty. otherwise it seems you know what you're doin. never used paint thinner, i just throw em in oil and manipulate (chains) clutch may require disassembly, you'll want a good pair of clip ring pliers

thanks for the help.

i pulled the cord a couple times and it pulls just fine with no restrictions. it has oil in it, but does need to be changed. i have a bottle of 5w-30 synthetic at my house so i'm gonna use that. didn't check the fuel filter yet, i'll do that today. i also need a new spark plug. its probably fine but i wanna replace it anyway.

i'll see how the clutch is when i get home from work. if its still tough to move ill take it apart and clean everything. i have some clip ring pliers lying around somewhere

oh sorry i didnt know what you meant. yea it has compression.

but i had a close call, when i pulled the cord a few times, about 10 wasps started flying out. i yelled some expletives and ran, and then coated the engine with wasp spray. every second or so you could see another wasp drop out of there and fall dead. later that night i took the pull cord and the cover behind it off, and i found a wasp nest the size of my fist. i think im gonna use that as an airfilter for more power!

You're still alive?! Darn... time for Plan B... :p

Air filter = rejet. Or re-adjust.

chemtool makes this stuff called berryman's. It comes in a metal can. That stuff is fantastic. I never take a carb off before i've put a dollop of this stuff in the gas tank. Most of the time you can avoid a lot of disassembly and cleaning of your fuel system by using this stuff. I had one of those Intek OHV Briggs engines that I put on my go kart. had water in the gas and everything. I couldn't really get all of the water out of the fuel line and carb bowl and the lowest parts of the fuel tank. I ran that Berryman's for an afternoon of rough-running go karting and the thing smoothed right out. That's the way I prefer to fix a rough-running-hasn't been used in a long time-full of old gas varnish and water-engine. Keep a bottle of that stuff around if you mess with small gas engines.
