New from SC

hello all.
My name is Mike, I live in SC. I am not really building my own go kart but trying to make improvements to 1 for my kids. Make it a little more safe for them to ride in. Or at least thats the goal. We have a Yerf Dog go kart that I bought used. Has the 6hp tecumseh engine OHVV (i believe it is) in it. I will look around a little bit before I start asking questions. My main thing I am looking for is seat and belt related.

bascily what I am wanting to do is replace the bench seat that is already on the kart with 2 bucket style seats. and maybe even look at replacing the belts with a 4 point harness on each seat. the harness I am not sure about yet. Gotta make sure there is a good enough place to mount them to so if they do hit anything it does not crack their collar bone. which I dont think they will be going fast enough for that to happen anyway. I am new to the karts so, would any style bucket seat work with the correct hardware to mount the seats

Welcome to the forum, Mike! The first question is whether the kart has a roll bar or cage. If it does, go ahead and install restraints. If it does not, do not. In the event of a rollover, a cageless kart dictates that it is safer for the occupants to be thrown clear, rather than have a machine land on top of them. A kart with a cage requires the restraints to avoid having limbs or or bodies tangled up in the cage, or impacts with the cage itself.

yes it does have the cage. It has a bench seat with your normal 3 point harness bolted to the side of the cage. What I am wanting to install is more of a 4 point harness that would bolt back behind the seats and remove the 3 point harness that is installed now as they are all tore up and not really working the best.

You can get 4-pt "racing" harnesses (think tuner crowd) on evilbay for as cheap as $20. I picked a similar one up locally, and it works very well.

LOL yeah. "Tuner Crowd" My Daily Driver is a Dodge Neon SRT4.. what gave me the idea. As I am building my car for amature rallycross. Thanks for the input on everything. Any input on what style bucket seats work best.
