A buggy like that usually uses a Vw engine.

Yes, these big buggies are usually VW powered, which is a 4cyl 1600+cc engine. To do this kind of build you may find it easier to buy a sandrail/ rail buggy that needs restored and restore it with a military theme.

Otherwise, you could build something smaller using a large snowmobile engine or a sport bike motor 800cc and up. These machines are heavy, and need a lot of engine.

Look into Sand rail building online. Being located in South Africa I think there is parts available for the old air cooled beetles. That is the type of engine that powers a buggy that size.

Unfortunately, snowmobiles are EXTREMELY hard to find here in South Africa :D. There are a lot of the old beetle engines floating around, and they are not terribly expensive (not terribly cheap either).

I am not too sure about there by you guys in the US, but a lot of the beetle engines over here are used to make what we call "Beach Buggies". Here are a few pics

Yes the beach buggies are fairly common around here. We also have "sand rails" and "woods buggies" that often use the same VW engine as the beach buggies. I know that they made beetles in Africa for a long time, so I would think that you could find parts. Yes I didn't really think about snowmobiles with the climate, but that makes sense.
