Hey everyone! I just picked up an original Dingo project kart for my son and I! I believe it is a dingo at least and it definitely has some work that needs to be done! We're pumped to get this thing into Mario-kart condition but I was told it has a bent rear axle (original) and it has a loud screeching that is intermittent while driving. I cant seam to get the nut off on the right hand side either, left was easy though. It does have a new carb, torque converter, spark plug, and throttle cable. Other than that I'm just planning on a few welds and paint as well as reupholster the seat. Any help with what rear axle I need to get ordered. From what I have read I think it's an 1" to 3/4 taper with 6" ends? Again any input is greatly appreciated!! Looking forward to this time with my son and this build along with all the knowledge we can get from here!

Nice kart. Welcome to the forum. You might have to cut the axle to get it out, but work on it a bit more before resorting to that. When you order the new axle I would also buy new bearings. Whatever caused the axle damage might have put a hurt on them as well. And it could also be the source of the screeching.

Pfft, wouldn't change a thing on it except gasoline, oil and lube (plus whatever prevents operation). Did you actually determine if the axle is indeed bent or not? Screeching noises could be bearings or even the brake band dragging on the drum....

Touch it up with black and gold paint where needed and RIDE! It's definitely mid-1980s and takes its styling cues from the Bandit 1 car from the Smokey and the Bandit movies.

This says the axle is 38.5"

Also an option: https://www.bmikarts.com/High-Back-Single-Seat-for-Go-Karts_p_21241.html

Thank you!! Yes unfortunately the axle was in deed bent, not the end of the world but will get it back together and see about the squealing! I really appreciate the input! I'd love to go original with the paint but this first round goes to my son, he wants a Yoshi cart! Going to hit it with some geen, white and blue. Atleast the wheels will be back to the golden glory!

Hey, the kids gotta rule. You're just the bank and the mechanic, NOT the decision maker. I'd paint it any way he wants it.

That's the way of things. I see parents bending over backwards for their unruly brats and asking them what they want all the time. 😄

Not saying that's happening here but the boy can't even reach the pedals yet (karts truly are for adults/young adults/teens) and is asking for a Yoshi kart. Can you make a Yoshi kart from a Dingo? For that I think it needs lots of fiberglass bodywork and stuff. Get to it YoshikartDad!

On the other hand, sometimes a thing is best left as-is in an appreciation of the past. A buddy bought a Model A with some original paint left on it. Is he going to sandblast the whole thing and paint it pink? Nah, he chose to preserve what's there, touch up the rest and it will be a "runner" car for Sunday drives... I guess it's a "maintained survivor" as a genre.

With modified pedals and a pillow behind him I had my oldest Grandson ( now 21) driving a week before his 5th birthday. It was on a dry lake bed. Smooth and absolutely nothing to hit. The O P's son is more than old enough ( with a little patient coaching ) to learn to drive. I completely understand your words about spoiled kids bossing their parents around, but if he wants it painted green and blue is it really that important on a used go kart.
