Beans, did you get the torque converter in a box with the kart? It looks like (in the other thread) that you have a jackshaft and most of the torque converter stuff that you need.

If you're referring to the backplate, just create a jackshaft instead but, if you reeeally want one, BMI have some
no not at all, im wanting to save anyway possible without causing a safety issue. im actually gonna try to break out my arc welder, i havent used one in at least 15 years so ive been putting it off forever, but im gonna try to make a header/straightpipe for one or more of my motors if it goes well.

would you happen to know if these rods i picked up tonight will work

3/32" #7014

im hoping so, please let me know so that i can return them, i got 3/4 black colored steel pipe from the plumbing section so if thats wrong please steer me in the right direction.

thank you for your help

I'm not up on ARC electrodes (I'm a MIG man) but that number seems to ring a bell. Best wait for others to chime in.

My favourite welding rods are 2.5mm CIGweld Satincraft 13 rods they are good for just about anything including mild and galvanised steel. 3/32" is about 2.4mm so I'm sure they will be OK. I have used 3/4" tube to make a header before. About 14" should be the right length.

Also my two best welding tips for someone who hasn't done much welding a while are:
1) Get an automatic welding helmet (soooo much better)
2) Clamp a piece of scrap under the neutral clap and strike an arc on it first. This heats up the rod and makes it much less likely to stick when you start welding the job.

6013's rang a bell when i was at the store too, but the old old old man helping me recommended the rods i ended up buying, they were only $5 for a small pack so ill try the 6013's when i go to the store next.

thanks for the tips

im sure people sell used auto helmets, any idea what a good price to pay for a used one would be?

Satincraft rods are 6013 as well
With regard to auto helmets you can get new ones for about $100. There are of course very expensive ones as well. The only difference is the time they take to go light again after the arc has stopped. This is not a problem. So I guess $100 helmets second hand would be less than that.

You could buy a new auto Darkening helmet for around 40$ on sale from harbor freight
i have a regular helmet to hold me over but i think if i do a decent job and get back into it ill be starting with the harbor frieght $40 helmet. then move up if needed.

thanks for the advice guys

40 bucks, no flash burns, no welding the job to the bench, I'd get one.

I actually have two because I tort my ten year old how to weld. I told him you are only a man when you can stick steel together with fire!
